First of all, you've got to love the team names.  At past tryout camps, team names were just colors.  I like that the organization is using this opportunity to honor some former players, and the Johnson family.  Well done.

Click here to read some background information about Ridder Arena, which is where the University of Minnesota women's hockey team plays their home games.  Mariucci Arena, where the men's University of Minnesota team plays, is located right next door to Ridder Arena.

Click here to view a Google maps view of the area.  Minneapolis is a 6-7 hour drive from Lincoln, NE.

The University of Minnesota campus is beautiful, and the facilities within Ridder Arena are top notch.  The campus is very close to downtown Minneapolis, but not too busy.  The Mall of America isn't too far away, and there are plenty of food options near the rink in between scrimmages.  The only negative is lack of on-street parking around Ridder Arena.

This will be the fourth straight year that the Stars will hold their tryout camp at Ridder Arena..  This will be the seventh straight year for me attending Lincoln's tryout camp (6 years for the blog).

Regarding the schedule itself, it is much different than in years past, but that's to be expected with a new general manager and head coach on board.  Instead of jumping right into tryout games the first day, the team will hold three practices on Thursday.  Actual games don't start until Friday.  So excluding the camp all-star game, there will be a total of 12 games, down from 15 in past years.  Also, instead of two camp all-star games, there will be only one.

However, the actual games this year are 1:45 long, which is about 35 minutes longer than in years past.  So even though there will be three less games, there will more hockey to watch because the games are longer.  I did the math, and compared to the last two camps, there will be roughly three more hours of hockey played at the 2014 camp.  I like that very much.

The only thing I really don't like about the schedule is the short amount of time in between the morning and afternoon sessions on Friday and Saturday.  In past years, I had about 2.5 hours to find someplace with free wifi to update the blog with full recaps of the morning session.  I won't have time to do that this go around, so full recaps will have to wait until the evening sessions are complete on Friday and Saturday.  That's just me whining. :)

I'm really getting excited for this event!  Can't wait to make the trek up there to watch the future of this proud program.  I will be posting a number of articles related to the camp in the next couple of weeks, so stay tuned for that.
