Stars acquire defenseman Eric Schurhamer from Waterloo

Before I get to the trade news, I wanted to mention that I won't be posting a weekend preview article.  I wish I had time to get it done tonight, but it's not going to happen.  Stars will host the Tri-City Storm at the IceBox Friday night before the big outdoor game at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha on Saturday.  If you are attending the outdoor game, click here to check out the article I posted a few days ago which has a lot of good information you'll want to look over.

Per the Stars' official Twitter account, the team acquired defenseman Eric Schurhamer ('93) from the Waterloo Blackhawks today.  Click here to read the tweet.  No news yet on what the Stars gave up for Schurhamer, but I would guess it was a draft pick.

In 14 games with the Blackhawks this season, Schurhamer has 3 points (all assists), 16 penalty minutes, and is -6.  Schurhamer injured his shoulder early on in the season and didn't play his first USHL game for the Blackhawks until 12/28/12.  Eric was a second round draft pick of Waterloo in the 2012 USHL Entry Draft.  Schurhamer will attend the University of Maine in the fall of 2013.

Schurhamer has been described to me as a excellent skater, and someone who can play both the PP and the PK.  Hopefully he can help Lincoln's dismal PP unit.  Best of luck to him with the Stars.

According to the same tweet linked above, the Stars released defenseman Travis Maxwell, who played 24 games with the Stars after being called up from the Minot Minotauros of the NAHL.  Maxwell scored 5 points (1g, 4a) and was +10 in those 24 games.  I was told this afternoon that Maxwell suffered a significant injury recently, so the addition of Schurhamer makes sense.  I'm hoping the injury to Maxwell isn't too serious, and the Stars invite him back next season.  Although he wasn't flashy, I thought Maxwell was a solid addition to the team and a valuable piece of Lincoln's defense corps.

Go Stars.
