Michael Bunn named USHL Offensive Player of the Week

Lincoln Stars forward Michael Bunn was named "CCM USHL Offensive Player of the Week" by the league this afternoon.  Click here to read the official USHL press release.  Here's an excerpt from the article:

Michael Bunn, F, Lincoln Stars: He scored four goals over two games, including his first career hat trick while playing his first USHL game on Friday.  The Wake Forrest, NC native, who has spent the past five months recovering from knee surgery, found out shortly before the game that he was going to be in the lineup and took advantage of the opportunity by netting a pair of second-period goals and added another in the third to complete the hat trick in a 6-1 win over Des Moines.

The 18-year-old also finished the night with a game high plus-three rating.  On Saturday, Bunn scored his fourth goal of the weekend just under three minutes into a 6-2 loss to Des Moines.

Stars radio announcer Mike Melbye said this past weekend that Bunn is the first Lincoln Stars player to score three goals (hat-trick) in his first USHL game.  I reached out to league officials this past weekend and asked if they knew if Bunn was the first USHL player to get a hat-trick in his first USHL game.  They were unable to confirm that.

It's hard to believe that Bunn is the first member of the Lincoln Stars to win a weekly USHL award this season.  Even during Lincoln's 10-game winning streak to start the season, they never had a player win an offensive, defensive, or goaltending award.

Regardless, it's nice to see the league put a spotlight on the Stars, and Michael Bunn in particular.  I had a feeling Bunn could be a special player back in June when I saw him at Lincoln's tryout camp.  Because of a knee injury suffered during camp, Michael has spent the last 6 months or so rehabbing his knee.  As I said in an earlier article, I can only imagine how hard he has worked to get to this point.  Very happy to see his hard work rewarded.  Hopefully the goals continue.

Congrats again to Michael!
