With the loss, the Stars dropped to 11-3-0 (22 points) and are still tied for first place in the USHL western conference. The Waterloo Blackhawks, who were tied with the Stars coming into this weekend, also lost tonight. Click here to view the current USHL standings.
Tough game to lose, but I thought the Stars played very well overall. The players have no reason to be disappointed with their effort. They battled all night against the top team in the USHL and lost because of a fluke goal. Late in the third period with the score tied up at 2-2, after a dump-in by the Saints, the puck took a crazy bounce off the zamboni door and deflected to a wide open Dubuque player who put it into the open net.
Scoring for the Stars tonight was Jake Wood and Vinni Lettieri (both goals were scored in the second period). Jackson Teichroeb stopped 28 of 31 in the loss.
The Fighting Saints went 1-for-5 on the powerplay while the Stars went 0-for-3 with the man advantage.
This game definitely had a playoff feel to it. Both teams traded punches like a heavyweight title fight. I just wish it wasn't decided on a crazy bounce.
The Stars will be back in action next Wednesday night (Thanksgiving eve) at the IceBox against the Omaha Lancers.
