USHL releases 2012-13 regular season schedule

Hooray! The USHL released the 2012-13 regular season schedule today.  Nice to see the schedule released in the early part of July, as opposed to seasons past when delays caused it to be released in late July.

Click here to see the 2012-13 season schedule for the Lincoln Stars.

For the first time ever in USHL's Tier 1 history, the league will expand to 64 regular season games played per team, up from 60.  Each USHL club will play 32 games at home, and 32 games will be played on the road.

The Lincoln Stars will open the 2012-13 regular season at home on Friday, September 28th against the Sioux Falls Stampede.  Looking forward to that game at the IceBox already.  Only a little more than two months away!

Here are some highlights of the Stars' season schedule:

  • In the first half of the season (34 games), the Stars will play 16 games at home, and 16 games on the road.  Even steven.

  • In the second half of the season (34 games), the Stars will play 16 games at home and 16 games on the road.

  • 17 Friday night home games, 12 Saturday night home games, 2 Tuesday night home games, and 1 Wednesday night home game.

  • No Halloween or New Year's Eve home game in Lincoln this season (again).  The Stars will be on the road on 12/31/12 in Waterloo, IA against the Blackhawks.

  • The Stars will play at home the day before St. Patrick's Day in 2013 on Saturday, March 16th against the Green Bay Gamblers.

  • The Stars will play at home on Wednesday, November 21st (the day before Thanksgiving) against the Omaha Lancers.  That should be a fun one.  The Stars will travel to Chicago, IL to take on the Steel on the Friday after Thanksgiving (11/23), and then on to Dubuque, IA to take on the Fighting Saints on the Saturday following Thanksgiving (11/24).

  • The Stars will play three weekday (not counting Friday) games at home: against the Omaha Lancers (Wednesday 11/21/12), the Waterloo Blackhawks (Tuesday 1/15/13), and the Sioux City Musketeers (Tuesday 3/5/13).

  • On Saturday, February 9th the Stars will take on the Omaha Lancers in the first ever outdoor USHL game which will be held at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, NE.  Faceoff will be at 12:35pm CST.  Click here to read more about that event.  Can't wait for that one!

  • The Stars will play five of their first six games of the season at home at the IceBox.

  • The longest home-stand at the IceBox is only 3 games (occurs five times during the season).  It's hard to believe the Stars don't have at least four straight games at home next season.

  • The longest road swing for the Stars is 4 games (occurs three times during the season).

  • Lincoln only has two times during the regular season where they will play three games in three nights: January 25, 26, 27 (two of the three are at home) and February 14, 15, 16 (all three on the road).

  • The Stars will play 53 games against Western Conference opponents, and only 11 games against Eastern Conference opponents.  I wish there was a way to see more Eastern Conference teams at the IceBox.

  • Indiana and Chicago are the only two teams we will not see at the IceBox next season.

  • # of games against opponents
    Omaha - 10
    Tri-City - 9
    Fargo - 8
    Sioux Falls - 8
    Sioux City - 8
    Des Moines - 6
    Waterloo - 4
    Cedar Rapids - 2
    Dubuque - 2
    Youngstown - 2
    Chicago - 1
    Green Bay - 1
    Indiana - 1
    Muskegon - 1
    Team USA - 1

Okay, I'd like to hear from you now. Your thoughts on the new schedule?  Start planning those road trips!  Hopefully soon the USHL will release the game schedule for the 2012 Fall Classic which will be held from September 19-22 in Sioux City, Iowa.

15.6% of the regular season games the Stars will play in 2012-13 will be against the Omaha Lancers. Best rivalry in junior hockey!

I figured they would play the first game in the new arena in Ralston against the Lancers, but I guess maybe they wanted to have that be a home game for Omaha and not Lincoln :-)

Also was surprised to see a game scheduled the night before the outdoor game, that seems like a quick turnaround, but at least it's at the Ice Box and I have to remember these guys might recover quicker than I do from things.

Thanks for the breakdown, the season will be here before we know it.

Also, only 8 teams total will make the playoffs next season. 4 teams from each conference. Gotta finish in the top four next season or you'll be playing golf instead. Tough competition for sure for those four spots.
