Big day for the Lincoln Stars at the 2012 NHL Entry Draft

The 2012 NHL Entry Draft wrapped up today, and it was a big one for a number of current, former, and future members of the Lincoln Stars.  I'll post the particulars below.

Click here to see the results of all of the NHL draft picks made today.  Click here to view a list of all of the USHL players selected today.

It would have been nice to see a few other Stars players names on that list, but I guess that will have to wait until next year.  Regardless, a great showing by the Lincoln Stars at the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.

4th round (97th overall):  Anaheim Ducks - Kevin Roy
5th round (140th overall): Detroit Red Wings - Mike McKee
6th round (152nd): Edmonton Oilers - John McCarron (now at Cornell University)
6th round (181st): Los Angeles Kings - Paul LaDue
7th round (188th): Minnesota Wild - Louis Nanne (2012 USHL entry draft pick)

It will be interesting to see where Kevin Roy ends up playing hockey next season.  He has a verbal commitment to Brown University, but that could change.  If the Ducks' management thinks he'd be better off playing major junior hockey next season in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), they may suggest that.  The Quebec Remparts of the QMJHL courted Kevin Roy last December....will they do it again?  There has also been a lot of rumors floating around that Kevin might walk away from the verbal commitment to Brown and could play college hockey somewhere else.  The reigning USHL Player of the Year has a number of options.

All signs point to Mike McKee playing again for the Stars next season, but that also might change.  He has committed to play college hockey for Western Michigan University in either 2012 or 2013.  Mike was at Lincoln's tryout camp a few weeks ago, which would indicate to me that WMU doesn't want McKee until 2013.  However, McKee is a draft pick of the Ontario Hockey League's (OHL) Ottawa 67's, so he could forfeit his college eligibility and play major junior hockey as well next season.  In my opinion, Mike is ready to make that step up and doesn't need another season in the USHL.  As much as I'd love to see him in a Stars uniform this fall, his size and skill level are above the competition he'd see in the USHL next season.

Edit:  Click here to read an article that was recently posted by Red Wings online magazine.  Good stuff.  The article seems to imply that Mike will be attending WMU this fall.  We'll have to wait and see how that plays out.  Another article here from Rob Benneian of detroitsportsnation.com about McKee.

John McCarron played 2+ seasons in Lincoln from 2008-2011.  John will be a sophomore next season at Cornell University.  "Big Mac" certainly has the size (6'2", 225 pounds) and skill to play at the next level.  Hopefully we'll see him in an Oilers uniform someday.

Paul LaDue will be back in Lincoln for the 2012-13 season before heading to the University of North Dakota in the fall of 2013.  How awesome is it to be drafted by the reigning Stanley Cup champions!  Kevin Roy in Anaheim and Paul LaDue in Los Angeles.  Maybe they could rent a beach house together once they get to the big show?  Sounds like a reality TV show I wouldn't want to miss. :)

Lastly, Stars prospect and Minnesota native Louie Nanne was drafted by his hometown Minnesota Wild.  Louis is the grandson of Minnesota hockey legend Lou Nanne, so I'm sure this Wild draft pick is a familiar name for Minnesota fans.  Louis has yet to make a decision on where he will play hockey next season.  From what I've been told, he will not return to Edina High School (MN) to finish his senior season for the Hornets.  Instead, he will play for either the Penticton Vees of the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) or the Lincoln Stars.  Louis looked great at Lincoln's tryout camp a few weeks ago, and in my opinion he'd be a great asset to the team if he were to decide on the Stars.  Nanne's cousin is current Stars forward Vinni Lettieri, and both have committed to play hockey for the University of Minnesota.

Edit:  According to this article, Louie will play hockey next season for the Penticton Vees of the BCHL.  The BCHL is an offense-first type of league, so he'll be able to pad his offensive stats a lot more on a stacked Vees team than he would in a league like the USHL that is more defensive oriented.

Go Stars!

Omaha had Jake Bischoff drafted, but not sure if he will play for the Lancers next season.

Waterloo had 1 current player drafted, Vince Hinostroza, as well as 2 incoming players, Zach Stepan and Chris Calnan, and 2 alumni drafted, Brady Vail and Nick Ebert.

Yeti, I believe the key word in the article on Mike McKee is "assuming" he goes to WMU this fall, the Red wings would have until 2016 to sign him. as you say, he was at tryouts so that would 'seem' to indicate he is not headed to school until '13. so if he does not go to college this fall, does he go back into the draft or does that give Detroit another year to get him signed?
