B³ Prospect Watch: Tryout Camp Edition

I thought I'd create a list of all of the players previously drafted by the Lincoln Stars who could be at the 2012 tryout camp next week in Minneapolis, MN.

Some of these players were just drafted by the Stars last month, while some others were drafted in 2011 or 2010 and have been protected by the team.
This list does not include players who suited up for the Stars last season.  I will post a different article soon and mention the players from last season who should be at Ridder Arena next trying out for the Stars.

I'm just a fan, so I'm not going to speculate on who could or could not be at camp next week.  I've heard some rumors about certain players from last season not being protected, or certain players looking elsewhere next season.  Until I get a chance to look at the camp rosters, I'm not going to speculate on that.

Anyway, as I stated above, this post is VERY long.  I didn't want to hog the entire page of the website with this lone post, so click the "Read more" link below to check it out.  Thanks.

Michael Bitzer ('93) - 5'11", 205 pounds - 2012 USHL Entry Draft Pick
2011-12 stats:  Originally from Moorhead, MN, Bitzer played last season for Moorhead High School where he had a record of 22-8 with a 1.80 goals against average, a .933 save percentage, and seven shutouts.  Bitzer was considered by many to be the best goaltender coming out of Minnesota high school hockey last season.  Due to his outstanding season with Moorhead, Bitzer won the Frank Brimsek Award for Minnesota’s best senior goaltender.  After finishing the season with Moorhead, Bitzer played a handful of games with the Alexandria Blizzard of the North American Hockey League (NAHL) where he went 3-0-1 in four regular season games with a 2.00 goals against average and a .915 save percentage.  In the playoffs for the Blizzard, Bitzer went 1-1-1 with a 1.50 goals against average and a .958 save percentage.  Click here to read number of articles about Bitzer by reporter-extraordinaire Ryan S. Clark.  Bitzer is uncommitted to a college at this time.

Garrett Brossart ('94) - Forward - 5'11, 145 pounds - 2012 USHL Entry Draft Pick
2011-12 stats:  The last player selected by the Stars in the '12 Entry Draft, Brossart is a native of Fargo, ND.  Last season he played for the Chicago Fury Major Midget team.  According to the link above, Brossart scored 22 points (9g, 13a) in 40 games for the Fury last season.  Before playing for the Chicago Fury, Brossart was a member of the Fargo South Bruins high school team.  According to this article, he was the only freshman on the varsity squad.  I believe Brossart is uncommitted to a college.

Michael Bunn ('94) - Forward - 6'0", 170 pounds - 2012 USHL Entry Draft Pick
Bunn, a native of Raleigh, NC, played  last season for Culver Military Academy where he was a junior.  This is another player that I wasn't able to find a lot of good information on.  According to the link above Bunn scored three points in six games for Culver.  As far as I can tell, Bunn is uncommitted to a college.

Max Coatta ('94) - Forward - 5'10", 175 pounds - 2010 USHL Futures Draft Pick
2011-12 stats: Max just finished up his junior season with the Minnetonka (MN) Skippers high school hockey team.  Coatta was the third leading scorer for the Skippers with 48 points (23g, 25a) in 28 games played.  Click here to view his stats from the 2010-11 season.  Current Stars forward Tommy Schutt and Vinni Lettieri were teammates of Coatta's two seasons ago at Minnetonka HS.  Coatta participated in the Stars' tryout camp last June in Minneapolis and was named to one of the two camp all-star games.  Max's older brother Sam Coatta played two seasons for the USHL's Sioux Falls Stampede from 2009-11.

Trevor Cope ('94) - Forward - 5'11", 185 pounds - 2011 USHL Entry Draft Pick
2011-12 stats:  Trevor is playing for Victory Honda U-18 (MM) of the Tier 1 Elite Hockey League for the second straight season.  The native of Commerce, Michigan scored 46 points (18g, 28a) along with 111 PIM's in 36 games played for Victory Honda.  In seven playoff games with Victory Honda U-18, Cope has scored 9 points (3g, 6a).  Trevor was a 2011 draft pick of the NAHL Corpus Christi IceRays, and played three games with them back in late January.  Cope participated in the Stars' tryout camp last June where he was selected to one of the two camp all-star games.  According to this article, Cope has "committed" to play for the BCHL's Langley Rivermen next season, so Cope may not be at the camp next week.

Charles Guevremont ('94) - Forward - 6'0", 176 pounds - 2012 USHL Entry Draft Pick
2011-12 stats:  Charles is a native Iles Des Soeurs, Quebec, Canada.  Last season he played for the Magog Cantonniers of the Quebec Midget AAA league.  In 31 games for the Cantonniers, Guevremont scored 23 points (11g, 12 assists) and accumulated 16 penalty minutes.  According to this video, Charles was selected by the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) in June of 2011.  I have been informed via email that Charles is very much interested in playing in the USHL.  However, I ran across this tweet which states that Guevremont could end up in the QMJHL next season with Cape Breton.

Gordon Helmuth ('96) - Forward - 5'10", 160 pounds - 2012 USHL Futures Draft Pick
2011-12 stats:  Gordon played last season for the Detroit Little Caesars U-16 squad.  In 29 games, Helmuth scored 15 points (4g, 11a) to go along with 34 PIM's.  According to this article, Gordon is an "honest two-way player with a high compete level. Is persistent, forceful and abrasive, and has the ability to get underneath the opposition’s skin. Battles hard and is more than willing to work the trenches and do the dirty work."  Current Stars forward Brent Tate also came from the Detroit Little Caesars program.  From the description of Helmuth's play, he sounds like he plays a very similar game to Tate's.  Like Daniel Willett above, Gordie was recently drafted by a OHL team a few weeks ago, the Soo Greyhounds.

Max Humitz ('95) - Forward - 5'9", 150 pounds - 2011 USHL Futures Draft Pick
2011-12 stats:  Max finished his first season with the U-16 Honeybaked Hockey Club where he scored 31 points (12g, 19a) in 29 games played. The native of Livonia, Michigan played last season for the Stevenson High School (MI) hockey team.  Click here to view his stats with Victory Honda from 2008-09.  Humitz participated in the Stars' tryout camp in Minneapolis last June where he was selected to one of the two camp all-star games.

Sean Malone ('95) - Forward - 6'0", 175 pounds - 2011 USHL Futures Draft Pick
2011-12 stats:  Sean just finished up his junior season as a forward on the Nichols Prep School (Buffalo, NY) hockey team where he was his team's leading scorer with 35 points (17g, 18a) scored in 15 games played.  Malone just recently committed to play college hockey at Harvard University (starting in 2013 or 2014).  From what I have been told, Sean received hockey offers from Cornell, Princeton, Brown, and Michigan State as well.  Malone is also an all-state soccer player for Nichols Prep School.  It is still unknown if Sean will finish his senior season at Nichols next season, or report to Lincoln to play with the Stars.  Malone participated in the Stars' tryout camp last June in Minneapolis where he was selected to both camp all-star games.

Brandon Morley ('94) - Forward - 5'9", 160 pounds - 2012 USHL Entry Draft Pick
2011-12 stats:  Morley, who is originally from Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada, played for the South Surrey Eagles of the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) where he scored 47 points (14g, 33a) in 49 games and 63 penalty minutes.  In 2010-11, Morley also played for the South Surrey Eagles where he scored 29 points (11g, 18a) in 57 games played.  According to this article, Brandon has committed to Merrimack University, but I don't see his name listed on Chris Heisenberg's NCAA Recruit website.

Vinny Muto ('93) - Defenseman - 6'2", 195 pounds - 2011 USHL Entry Draft Pick
2011-12 stats:  Muto was a first-year defenseman on the Cowichan Capitals (BCHL) hockey club last season where he scored 19 points (6g, 13a) to go along with 52 PIM's in 57 games played.  Two of his six goals scored this past season were game-winners.  Last season, Muto played for the Trinity-Pawling Prep School hockey team in Pawling, NY.  Vinny is originally from Buffalo, NY.  Click here to read an article about Muto after he was drafted by the Stars last year.  Vinny participated in the Stars' tryout camp last June where he was selected to one of the two camp all-star games.

Louie Nanne ('94) - Forward - 5'10", 165 pounds - 2012 USHL Entry Draft Pick
2011-12 stats:  Louie is the grandson of hockey legend Lou Nanne, and the older brother of Stars Futures Draft pick Tyler Nanne.  Louie and his brother Tyler are cousins to Stars forward Vinni Lettieri.  Louie was a junior last season for Edina High School, located in Edina, MN.  In 28 games last season for the Edina Hornets, Louie scored 27 points (15g, 12a) to go along with 34 penalty minutes.  Two of his teammates at Edina are also draft picks of the Stars: defensemen Parker Reno (2011 Futures Draft pick) and Jack Walker (2012 Futures Draft pick).  Nanne will also have some options next season.  He could return to Edina, tryout and play for the Stars, or go to the BCHL and play for the Penticton Vees.  Like Vinni Lettieri, Louie has committed to the University of Minnesota (2013).

Tyler Nanne ('96) - Forward - 5'9", 162 pounds - 2012 USHL Futures Draft Pick
2011-12 stats:  Tyler played last season as a sophomore on the Edina High School (MN) hockey team.  In 30 games, Nanne scored 22 points (7g, 15a) for the Edina Hornets.  Nanne is the grandson of Minnesota hockey legend Lou Nanne, and is the cousin of current Stars forward Vinni Lettieri.  One of Tyler's teammates at Edina HS is Parker Reno, who was a 2011 Futures Draft pick of the Lincoln Stars.  From what I've been told about Nanne, he can play both forward and defense.

Ryan Norman ('96) - Forward -  5'10", 160 pounds - 2012 USHL Futures Draft Pick
2011-12 stats:  Ryan played last season for the famous hockey prep school Shattuck St. Mary's as a member of the U-16 squad.  In 54 games played, Norman scored 61 points (33g, 28a) and was his teams second-leading scorer.  According to this article from Ryan S. Clark of the "Slightly Chilled" blog, Norman was a freshman on a team comprised mostly of sophomores and juniors.  Norman is getting attention from a number of colleges such as the University of Wisconsin.  I did find this video of Norman in action a few years ago when he played for the St. Louis Jr. Blues ('96).  Norman single-handedly beat three opponents to the puck and scores a very nice goal.  Ryan's father Todd Norman is a former NHL draft pick of the Edmonton Oilers, and played with former Lincoln Stars head coach Steve Johnson at the University of North Dakota from 1984-86.

Derek O'Flynn ('94) - Defenseman - 6'2", 195 pounds - 2011 USHL Entry Draft Pick
2011-12 stats:  Derek, who is a native of Canton, Michigan, is a first-year defenseman on the Michigan Warriors (NAHL) hockey team.  In 40 games for the Warriors this season, O'Flynn has scored 11 points (all assists) along with 37 PIM's.  According to this article, O'Flynn is attracting the attention of some NHL scouts.  From the NHL.com website, O'Flynn is mentioned as a "Player to Watch" for the 2012 NHL draft.  Derek participated in the Stars' tryout camp last June where he was selected to one of the two camp all-star games.

Ross Olsson ('94) - Forward - 6'4", 200 pounds - 2012 USHL Entry Draft Pick
Olsson, a native of North Billerica, MA, played for Williston Northampton School located Easthampton, MA last season as a junior.  I was informed via email that Ross scored 14 points (4g, 10a) in 24 games played for Williston.  Click here to read a great interview of Olsson courtesy of Russ Bitley at Examiner.com.  Olsson is being talked about as a possible NHL draft pick in 2013.  Ross has committed to play for Northeastern University, beginning the fall of 2013.  From what I've been told, Olsson will not return to Williston next season.

David Parrottino ('94) - Forward - 5'10", 170 pounds - 2011 USHL Entry Draft Pick
2011-12 stats:  David, who is originally from Rochester, Michigan, recently completed his first season with the U-18 Honeybaked Hockey Club.  In 26 regular season games for Honeybaked, Parrottino scored 21 points (8g, 13a) along with 22 penalty minutes.  In three playoff games, Parrottino scored 5 points (3g, 2a).  Click here to view his stats from 2010-11.  Parrottino was the first player born in '94 that the Stars selected in the 2011 entry draft.  David participated in the Stars' tryout camp last June where he was selected to one of the two camp all-star games.

Zack Pittman ('95) - Defenseman - 6'2", 195 pounds - 2012 USHL Entry Draft Pick
2011-12 stats:  Pittman is a native of Macomb, MI which is also the hometown of former Stars forward John McCarron.  Last season, Zack played 28 games for Detroit Honeybaked Minor Midget where he scored 20 points (6g, 14a) and added 49 penalty minutes.  One of Pittman's teammates on the Honeybaked squad is Stars 2011 Futures Draft pick Max Humitz.  Pittman was the youngest player selected by the Stars in the 2011 Entry Draft.  Zack was drafted by the OHL's Ottawa 67's in the 2012 OHL Priority Selection Draft.  Pittman is uncommitted to a college.

Sean Pomeroy ('95) - Defenseman - 6'2", 185 pounds - 2011 USHL Futures Draft Pick
2011-12 stats:  Pomeroy completed his first season playing for the Culver Academy Prep hockey team where he accumulated 8 points (1g, 7a) and 14 PIM's in forty games played.  The native of Glenview, Il  played the 2010-11 season for the Chicago Young Americans U-16 team where he racked up 6 points and 27 penalty minutes in 33 games played.  Click here to see his 2010-11 stats.  Pomeroy did not participate in the Stars' tryout camp last June.  According to this Facebook post, Pomeroy has committed to Princeton University.

Michael Prapavessis ('96) - Defenseman - 5'10", 144 pounds - 2012 USHL Futures Draft Pick
Does the last name sound familiar?  Well, it should.  Michael is the younger brother of former Stars defenseman Matt Prapavessis.  Michael is from Oakville, Ontario, Canada and played for the Mississauga Rebels AAA squad last season.  He was recently drafted by the Saginaw Spirit of the OHL.  I had a hard time finding game statistics for Michael online, so if you can find any stats from last season, please let me know.

Parker Reno ('95) - Defenseman - 6'1", 195 pounds - 2011 USHL Futures Draft Pick
2011-12 stats:  Parker just completed his junior season with the Edina (MN) Hornets High School hockey team where he scored 16 points (2g, 14a) to go with 28 PIM's in 30 regular season games played.  In three playoff games, Reno scored 6 points (all assists).  Reno is a player that a lot of scouts are looking at and was considered one of the top defenseman in the state as a junior.  Reno spent most of his sophomore season out of the lineup due to a knee injury, be he has since fully recovered.  Parker participated in the Stars' tryout camp last June where he was selected to one of the two camp all-star games.  I've been told that Parker will be at the camp next week, but will play his senior season at Edina in 2012-13.

Craig Skudalski ('95) - Forward - 6'6", 205 pounds - 2012 USHL Entry Draft Pick
2011-12 stats:  Skudalski is a native of Wyoming, PA where he played for Wyoming Seminary last season, which is located in Forty Fort, PA.  Like many players from prep schools, it's very hard to find stats online.  It appears he also played for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Jr. Knights where he scored 10 points (4g, 6a) in 33 games played.  I'm trying to remember if the Stars have ever drafted a player who is 6'6".  As far as I know, Skudalski is uncommitted to a college.  Skudalski will be a senior next season so he has some options.

Jack Walker ('96) - Defenseman - 5'9", 150 pounds - 2012 USHL Futures Draft Pick
2011-12 stats:  Jack played last season as a freshman on the Edina High School (MN) hockey team where he was a teammate of the Stars' third round Futures pick, Tyler Nanne.  In 29 games for the Edina Hornets, Walker scored 14 points (2g, 12a) along with 22 PIM's.  Jack, along with teammate Tyler Nanne, was invited to tryout for the Team USA U-17 team that participates in the USHL.  According to this article, Jack's older brother plays for the Victoria Royals of the WHL, and that team is very interested in Jack playing there next season.

Daniel Willett ('96) - Defenseman - 5'7", 165 pounds - 2012 USHL Futures Draft Pick
2011-12 season stats:  Daniel played last season for the New Jersey Rockets Junior B squad.  In 67 games for the Rockets, Willet scored 61 points (23g, 38a) in 67 games to go along with 68 PIM's.  8 of his 23 goals were of the game-winning variety, and 12 of his 61 points came on the powerplay.  Although undersized, Willet's stats are pretty impressive.  He's obviously an offensive-defenseman but the 68's PIM's show that he's not afraid to get his nose dirty.  According to this article, Willett has committed to play college hockey for Northeastern University.  Willett was drafted by the Plymouth Whalers in the OHL a few weeks ago, so he has some options in terms of where he wants to play hockey.

Brent Wold ('93) - Forward - 5'10", 174 pounds - 2011 USHL Entry Draft Pick
2011-12 stats:  Brent played the last two seasons for the Portage Terriers of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL) where he lead the Terriers in scoring in each of his two seasons.  In 2010-11 he scored 68 points (22g, 46a) in 61 games.  In 2011-12 for the Terriers, Wold scored 71 points (26g, 45a) in 60 games.  Wold is from Lac Du Bonnet, Manitoba, Canada.  Click here to read an article from the Winnipeg Sun last year about Wold's achievements in the classroom and on the ice.   Wold participated in the Stars' tryout camp last June in Minneapolis where he was selected to both camp all-star games.

Jake Wood ('93) - Forward - 5'8", 165 pounds - 2012 USHL Entry Draft Pick
The native of Georgetown, Ontario, Canada played for Gunnery Prep School in Washington, CT last season.  I was informed via email that Jake scored 38 points (12g, 26a) in 33 games for The Gunnery.  Wood graduated from The Gunnery in 2012, so I assume he'll play for the Stars next season (if he makes the team after the tryout camp).  Wood has committed to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institution (RPI) for the fall of 2013.

Justin Woods ('94) - Defenseman - 6'2", 210 pounds - 2011 USHL Entry Draft Pick
2011-12 stats:  Woods, who is originally from Fairbanks, Alaska, just finished up his first season with the Fairbanks Ice Dogs (NAHL) team.  Through 54 games this past season for the Ice Dogs, Woods scored 14 points (4g, 10a) to go along with 69 PIM's, and was +15.  Woods recently committed to play collegiate hockey for his hometown University of Alaska-Fairbanks Nannooks.  Click here to read more about that.  Before playing for Fairbanks in the NAHL, Woods played for U-18 California Titans hockey club where he scored 17 points (8g, 9a) and added 47 PIM's.  Click here to view a short YouTube video of Woods produced by the USHL before he was drafted by the Stars last year.  Justin participated in the Stars' tryout camp this past June where he was selected to one of the two camp all-star games.

Austin Yano ('93) - Defenseman - 5'9", 165 pounds - 2012 USHL Entry Draft Pick
2011-12 stats:  Last season, Yano played for the Estevan Bruins of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League.  The native of White City, Saskatchewan, Canada, Austin scored 27 points (9g, 18a) in 50 games to go along with 47 penalty minutes.  I'm unaware if Yano has committed to a college.

Well, that's it.  More than you probably ever wanted to know about some of the previously drafted players who could be at the tryout camp next week.  If there is anything I've missed with the info posted above, shoot me an email at lincolnstarshockey@gmail.com.

A few names I omitted were:

F-Alex Schoenborn ('95): Alex was drafted by the Stars in the 2011 USHL Futures Draft. He played three regular season games with Lincoln last year, but has since signed a contract with the WHL's Portland Winterhawks. The Winterhawks are major junior, thus Schoenborn will be ineligible to play NCAA hockey. Big loss for Lincoln and a waste of a draft pick.

F-Zach Pochiro ('94): Pochiro was drafted by the Stars last month in the 2012 USHL Entry Draft. Just a few days after being drafted by Lincoln, Pochiro signed a contract with the WHL's Prince George Cougars. Like Schoenborn, Pochiro will be ineligible to play NCAA hockey so I very much doubt we'll ever see him in a Stars uniform.

F-Michael McCarron ('95): Mike played last year for the Team USA U-17 squad, and in 2012-13 he will play for the U-18's. There is a chance that Mike could play in Lincoln in 2013-14, but as of right now he is scheduled to start at Cornell University in the fall of 2013.
