B³ Postgame Recap 11/8: Lincoln 6, Sioux City 2

The Lincoln Stars exploded with four unanswered third period goals to pull away from the hometown Musketeers and cruise to a 6-2 blowout victory tonight in Sioux City, IA.  Click here to view the Pointstreak boxscore.

With the win, their second in a row, the Stars improved to 6-4-0 (12 points) and are now all alone in second place in the USHL Western Conference.

I only listened to the radio feed tonight, so I'm going to rely mainly on the Poinstreak boxscore and what I remember from Mike Melbye's play-by-play.

For the fourth straight game, the Stars let the opponent score first as Nikita Sirotkin scored at powerplay goal at the 4:22 mark of the first period to give Sioux City the early 1-0 lead.  Like many of the previous four games, the Stars would answer later in the first period with a goal by Tommy Schutt at the 16:12 mark.  Schutt's goal came on the powerplay, while defensemen Colton Saucerman and Ralfs Freibergs earned the assists.  Through the first twenty minutes, the Stars outshot the Muskies 13-11.

In the second period, both teams would again trade single goals.  First it was Sioux City's Brad Robbins who scored halfway through the period to give the Musketeers a 2-1 lead.  With less than three minutes remaining, Stars forward Matt Friese scored to knot the game up at 2-2.  Stars forward Zachary Aston-Reese earned the lone assist on Friese's goal, his first as a member of the Lincoln Stars.  Sioux City outshot the Stars 9-6 in the second stanza.

I'm not sure what the coaches told the players in the locker room during the second intermission, but whatever it was....it worked.  Lincoln exploded with four goals in the third period, including two from red-hot Kevin Roy, to turn a tightly contested game into a blowout.  Instead of repeating what the Pointstreak boxscore states, I'm going to post the third period scoring below.

Lincoln - Kevin Roy (Mike McKeePaul Ladue) 4:06
Lincoln - Teemu Tiitinen (Ryan Cole) 5:16
Lincoln - Kevin Roy (Will Suter) 5:28
Lincoln - Bob Kinne (Logan Smith) 10:15

Looks nice, doesn't it?  As you can see, the Stars scored the first three goals in a 1:22 span early in the period.  Before the Muskies could catch their breath, the Stars had a commanding three goal lead.  Going back to the Friese goal in the second period, the Stars scored five unanswered goals.  Wow, wow, wow.  All of a sudden, this team is an offensive juggernaut.  14 goals scored in the last two games.

And yes, the "Kevin Roy Show" continued, as the Quebec native potted two additional goals to add to his total.  Through 10 games, Roy has scored 17 points (10g, 7a), and he is now tied for first place in scoring in the USHL.  In two games against Sioux City this season, Roy has scored 6 points (5g, 1a).  Two of those five goals against the Muskies are game-winning goals, also.  He's tied for first in the USHL in game winning goals (3).  He's tied for second place overall in plus/minus with +9.  He also leads the USHL in shots on goal with 53.

Lincoln outshot the Muskies 16-4 in the third period, and 35-24 overall.  Stars went 1-for-5 on the powerplay, while the Muskies finished 1-for-6 with the man advantage.  Stars goaltender Jackson Teichroeb stopped 22 of 24 shots on goal to record his fifth win of the season.

Running out of time tonight, so I'll end the recap now.  The Stars will earn some time off to rest before returning to the IceBox this weekend for back-to-back games on Friday and Saturday night.  Sioux Falls Stampede on Friday, and the Omaha Lancers on Saturday.  The Stars will also play Sunday as well, against the Tri-City Storm in Kearney.  More on those three matchups in a few days.

Quality road win tonight.  The team is definitely on a roll, and the offense is clicking on all cylinders.

Go Stars.
