Charles Williams named USHL Goaltender of the Week

Not a bad start for the netminder from Canton, MI.  In his first start with the Stars this past Friday, Williams recorded the shutout, was named the #1 star of the game, and now named USHL Goaltender of the Week.  Williams shared the weekly award with Tri-City netminder Pheonix Copley, who also recorded a shutout in his first start for his team.  Click here to read the article.  Here's an excerpt from the article:

"Williams also posted a shutout in his team’s season opener.  He stopped 25 shots as the Lincoln Stars earned a 2-0 win vs. Sioux Falls on Friday.  It was the first career USHL shutout for the 19-year-old from Canton, Michigan who appeared in 26 games during the 2009-10 USHL season with Des Moines."

I really can't say I'm surprised at what Charles Williams has been able to do so far.  He was outstanding at the Stars' tryout camp this past June in Minneapolis.  I was there for all of the tryout scrimmages, and Williams was by far the best goaltender in camp.  In a little over 150 minutes of play, Williams only gave up one goal at the tryout camp.  I had a good feeling about him then, and that feeling certainly hasn't changed.

Congrats to Charles!  Well deserved.  I hope this is the first of many awards he wins this season.

Thought I'd also point this out. TC Storm goaltender Phoenix Copley, who shared the award with Williams this week, was also at the Stars' tryout camp this past June. Copley made the second, and final camp all-star game, but he was not protected by Lincoln afterwards.

Shows you the kind of goaltending depth the Stars had at their tryout camp in June.

Charles' performance Friday was just an extension of how he played at the Fall Classic. we are lucky to have him on the team this year.
