B³ Postgame Recap 10/15: Lincoln 4, Sioux City 1

Scoreboard!
In Sioux City tonight, it was the Kevin Roy show as the rookie forward scored a natural hat trick in the third period to propel the visiting Lincoln Stars to an impressive 4-1 victory over the Musketeers.   Click here to view the Pointstreak boxscore.

With the win and the four points this weekend, the Stars are now 3-1-0 (6 points), and in second place in the USHL Western Conference.  The Sioux City Musketeers fell to 1-4-0 (2 points) on the season.

I was only able to listen to the game tonight on the radio, so this recap will be short.  If there were any fans who made the trip up to Sioux City tonight, I'd love to get their opinions on the game.  Please leave a comment below if you'd like.

The Muskies sported pink jerseys, and the Tyson Events Center had pink ice for Sioux City's "Pink the Rink" game to benefit breast cancer awareness.  A crowd of nearly 4,000 watched as the hometown Musketeers got out to a quick 1-0 lead three minutes into the first period when Brad Robbins scored for Sioux City.  Little did the Muskie fans know that Robbins' goal would be the only one scored by Sioux City that night.

Later in the first period, the Stars got on the board when forward Bob Kinne scored his first USHL goal of his career on the powerplay at the 12:03 mark.  The lone assist on Kinne's goal went to forward Tommy Schutt.  The score would remain tied up at 1-1 at the first intermission.  Sioux City outshot the Stars 11-7 in the first twenty minutes.

After a questionable cheap-shot on Stars forward Dominik Shine, there was a mini line brawl in the first period.  Shine went down after a Sioux City player hit Shine low near his knees, and Dominik had to be helped to the locker room afterwards.  Shine did not return to the game, and it is unknown how serious his injury is.  There was no call made on the play, but the Stars defended their teammate by mixing it up with a number of Sioux City players afterwards.  Due to their actions during the line brawl, Stars forward Brent Tate and Muskies forward Nikita Sirotkin were both ejected from the game.

Despite having two of their top forwards missing from the game, the Stars dominated both the second and third periods.  Even though the Stars were not able to score in the second period, they outshot the Muskies 15-6 in the second stanza.

It was the "Kevin Roy Show" in the third period as the native of Lac Beauport, Quebec took control of the game and scored a natural hat trick.  Roy's first goal of the period came at the 3:39 mark, with assists going to forward Luke Johnson and defenseman Ralfs Freibergs.  Luke Johnson has now scored at least one point in each of the four games the Stars have played this season.

At the 11:22 mark of the third, Roy stripped Sioux City Musketeers "all-star" defenseman Jordan Schmaltz of the puck and scored his second goal of the game to give Lincoln the 3-1 lead.  Not to be undone, Roy would score his third and final goal of the period with only 40 seconds remaining to give the Stars the eventual 4-1 win.  Roy's final goal was of the empty-net variety, and defenseman Paul Ladue earned the lone assist.  As BellTolls mentioned in our chat tonight, it was a Roy (Wah) Trick.

Lincoln outshot the Muskies 14-4 in the third period, and 36-21 overall.  What more can you say, it was a dominating, gutsy effort on the road tonight against a team that was angry after losing 10-2 to the Cedar Rapids Roughriders the night before.  It seemed like the Stars used the loss of Shine and Tate as inspiration, and controlled play for a majority of the game afterwards.  Stars goaltender Jackson Teichroeb in his second straight start, stopped 20 of 21 shots to record his second win of the season.  Back-to-back quality starts for Teichroeb.

A blog reader was kind enough to take a few pictures at the game with their phone, so I'm going to include those below.  The picture above also came from the same fan.  I really appreciate them sharing their pics for everyone!

The Stars will return to the ice next Friday night in Sioux Falls, SD against the Stampede.  On Saturday night, the Stars will be back at the IceBox to take on the red hot Indiana Ice.  More on those two games later in the week.  In the meantime, let's hope the lower body injury to Dominik Shine is not severe and he is able to return to the lineup soon.

Go Stars.
