Well, we know now for sure that defenseman Cole Martin and goaltender Lukas Hafner won't be back with the Stars for another season.  Very sorry to see both of those players not listed above.  Not sure why they aren't there, but that's junior hockey sometimes.  Players move on to other opportunities.  We wish them both the best with their future hockey endeavors.

The only name listed above not previously protected by the Stars is defenseman Ralfs Freibergs.  The 5'11", 181 pound defenseman is originally from Riga, Latvia, and was born in 1991 (making him an overager).  The Stars had an open spot on the roster for one more overager (each USHL team can roster only four players born in 1991), and Freibergs takes up an import spot on the roster also.  Each USHL team can roster four import players (players born outside of the USA).  I believe Canadian born players Kevin Roy, Mike McKee, and Jackson Teichroeb are the other three import players.

Just looking at his stats, Freibergs has put up some very good numbers.  He looks to be a more offensive-type defenseman, and will probably be a quarterback on the powerplay (much like Matt Prapavessis did last season).  Last season with the Texas Tornado of the NAHL, Freibergs was more than a point-per-game player, as he scored 55 points (7g, 48a) in 53 games played.  27 of those 55 points came on the powerplay.  Freibergs was named NAHL Defenseman of the Year last season for his efforts.  Just like every other player listed above, Freibergs will be required to play well enough to make the final 23 player roster, but this particular addition to the team looks very good in my eyes.  I thought the defensive core of this team was VERY strong before, but the addition of Freibergs makes it even better.

Otherwise, the roster is about what I expected.  I'd like to hear from all of you now.  What are your thoughts on the players battling for one of those 23 spots on the team?  The coaches now have some tough decisions to make in regards to which three players don't make the final roster of 23.

An addition.....

The Stars normally carry seven defensemen during the regular season, so I would guess that the coaches will cut one defenseman from the group of eight above. I suppose that they could carry eight d-men during the regular season, but that seems like a lot when you normally only dress six d-men a night.

To get from 26 to 23, that would mean two forwards out of the fifteen above would also need to be cut before the Stars open the 2011-12 regular season.

It will be interesting to see how this all plays out.

The preseason roster looks very strong in my opinion. There are a lot of defensemen with USHL experience, so the D might be a strength right away. Still can't believe Hafner isn't returning, but hopefully these two goalies will step up and fill some big shoes of Murdock! I'm really looking forward to this season. Can't believe preseason games are coming up soon!
