UPDATED: Cedar Rapids Roughriders guilty of logo theft?

Courtesy of puckdrawn.com

I know a number of blog readers are closely following this story, so I thought I'd give it a quick update.

The CEO of the Cedar Rapids Roughriders was contacted today by Ryan Clark, who runs the "Slightly Chilled" blog, which is devoted to the Fargo Force.  Clark reached out to CEO Jeff Jauch after reading the article on Puck Drawn yesterday.  Here's the synopsis from the Puck Drawn blog admin:

UPDATED: Ryan S. Clark, of the blog Slightly Chilled, reached out to the president and CEO of the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, Jeff Jauch, who had this to say about the logo infraction: “We actually purchased the logo from a source that had no idea the same logo existed,” Jauch said by phone. “So the real dispute is between the source that we purchased it from and Chad Stilson.”
You can read Ryan's blog post on the matter here.
As I mentioned in my original post, teams often times don't know that they are purchasing a logo from a less-than-honest designer. So, based on what Jeff Jauch has said, the team is looking to gets a pass. The full brunt of our frustration should now be directed at the thieving designer...Whoever THAT is.
Of course, the designer who created the RoughRiders' third jersey logo is absolutely lying when they say they had no idea the same logo existed. There is absolutely ZERO chance that the similarities between the two logos are coincidental. Zero, as in NONE.
I have an email out to Chad Stilson to see if he has any updates on his end.

I was tooling around on the internet yesterday, looking at photos on Facebook of some of the other hockey teams in the USHL, specifically the Cedar Rapids Roughriders.  I came across some pictures of a new third jersey the Roughriders have worn a number of times this season, and thought the logo on the jersey looked VERY familiar to a concept created by graphics artist Chad Stilson, which was first posted on the Puck Drawn blog last year.  I emailed the administrator of the Puck Drawn blog, and presented the evidence I found.

Click here to read what the folks at Puck Drawn say about this.  The author of the original concept has said he was never contacted by anyone representing the Cedar Rapids Roughriders about his design.  Very interesting read if you have time.

As the author of the Puck Drawn blog stated in the article I linked above, the Cedar Rapids organization may be unaware of the logo theft.  The artist they hired certainly did, however.

What say you?  Looking at the two logos, is it a blatant rip-off?

Very nicely done, Yeti. They sure look extremely similar. The wrinkle under the eye and the exact same hairline sure and the beard or cheekbone in the exact same shape...it sure seems like some "tracing" was done.

Wow tim, good catch. It definitely looks like a knock off. The forest rangers one is a pretty cool design. Hopefully somebody's feet get held to the fire foor this.

What's even worse is that the Roughriders website is selling apparel which has the "Roosevelt" logo on it. Like I said above, the organization might not have know the logo was a rip-off when it was first presented to them by whomever claimed it was original. But they are now profiting off of someone else's work, which is wrong.

Its strange that CR is able to have a logo so similar. It'll be interesting to see if this logo goes away (due to possible lawsuit.) Also, am I the only person who thinks people are crazy when I hear them say the Stars logo is a "copy" of the Dallas stars logo? Granted, they're both a star and the word stars, but come on. They're pretty different. Just a thought.

This could be interesting to see what happens. In the end though, is it going to make a difference in how the game turns out? Also, I remember a while back (sometime last season I think), there was a posting about a Russian hockey team logo that looked a lot like the Stars logo and script. So is that a logo infringement? Not trying to start anything here, just asking.

@ Sam I am, the company that the Stars logo is "based" off of, stopped using their logo when we came into the league. So I would venture to guess that the Stars went about acquiring the logo legally. But if they hadn't do you really think that they would not have noticed after 15 yrs?
Also I don't understand what you mean by does it make a difference in how the game turns out, are you talking about an actual game or something else?

time to re-post the pic of the STARS AUTHENTIC logo...??

@Layla, I don't think that the Stars organization took anything that they didn't either pay for or got with permission. I was just pointing out that the Stars logo and script are not original to the Lincoln Stars, as in they came up with the logo and script all their own. I have no problem with that at all.

As far how the game turns out, it's not the logo on the front that desides the winner or loser of the game, but the players playing the game. I also don't think that the USHL is going to make CR forfeit all their wins if this logo stuff turns out negativly for them. It is the designers fault for being lazy, and the CR management for not checking up on the designs they are presented.

As for logo's and designs, is there really an "original" design out there? It seems that MOST logo's and jersey designs could be similar to someone else's. The third jersey that Lincoln had for a while that looked a lot like the St. Louis Blues main jersey comes to mind. The colors and design were pretty darn close, just the logo was different. Maybe the Stars had permission to be so similar, maybe not. I don't know, nor am I really worried about it.

Oh yeah, the CR logo couldn't be a rip off, theirs is looking the other way! ;)
