B³ Postgame Recap 12/3: U-17's Team USA 4, Lincoln 3 OT Shootout

I apologize for the briefness of this article.  I've got a million things to do today, but I wanted to put something up from the game last night.  Thanks to blog reader "Starstruck" for the picture you see on the left.

The Lincoln Stars fell to the youngsters of Team USA U-17 Friday night by a score of 4-3 in overtime shootout.  With the loss, the Stars dropped to 9-7-1 (19 points, sixth place in the USHL Western Conference).  The win for the U-17's was only their second in nine tries against USHL opponents this season.  Scoring goals for Lincoln was Garrett Peterson (unassisted), John McCarron (assists to Cole Martin and Ryan Dzingel), and Brent Tate (unassisted).  Click here to view the Pointstreak boxscore.

The Stars found themselves down one goal going into the third period, but Brent Tate scored in the third to send the game to OT.  After a scoreless 4-on-4 overtime period, the game went to a shootout.  The only player on either squad who scored in the shootout was Team USA's Miles Koules, and the U-17's escaped the IceBox with a win.  Give a lot of credit to USA goaltender Collin Olson who stood on his head and stopped 33 of 36 Lincoln shots.  He's a big reason why his team was able to come away with the win.

Tough game for the Stars, as they outplayed and outshot (36-26) Team USA for the majority of the game.  Once again (I sound like a broken record), it was the special teams play for Lincoln that faltered.  Team USA scored two powerplay goals Friday night in six opportunities, while the Stars went 0-for-5 with the man advantage.  Stars radio announcer Mike Melbye mentioned after the game that the U-17's had not scored one powerplay goal until Friday night's game against Lincoln.  If the Stars want to continue to win games this season, they are going to have to figure out how to play a lot better on the penalty kill.  The Stars' PK unit is now rated 15th (80.2%) out of 16 USHL teams.  That has to improve if Lincoln expects to earn a spot in the playoffs this season.

The Stars will be on the road Saturday night in Des Moines to play the Buccaneers.  Puck drops at 7:05pm.  Lincoln is still looking for franchise win #500, so hopefully they can get that tonight against the Bucs.  We will be chatting tonight for that game, but I will not be able to host it.  Layla has agreed to host the chat tonight, so please thank her for doing that if you stop by tonight.  I'll be posting some pictures from the Team USA game very soon, so keep an eye out for that.

Just for the record, Yeti, back in October when you asked when win #500 would come, who would score the gamewinning goal and who would be goalie, I said tonight at Des Moines, Dzingel and Murdock. Not to toot my own horn or anything...but I hope the Stars make me correct :)

I remember that, BT. I really hope you are correct! The Stars need a big win to break out of this mini slump.
