B³ Weekend Preview: Tri-City and Sioux Falls

The Lincoln Stars (4-5-0, 8 points, 8th place in Western Conference) will be looking to improve upon their current three game home winning streak this Friday night when they host the Tri-City Storm at the IceBox in Lincoln, NE.  On Saturday night, the Stars will travel north on I-29 to battle the Stampede in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.  The puck will drop at 7:05pm for both games this weekend.  If you can't make it to any of the games this weekend, you can listen to Stars radio announcer Mike Melbye online at AM 1480 KLMS by clicking here.  You can also pay to watch live video of the game via B2 Network by clicking here.  You can also follow both games via Pointstreak by clicking here

First up for the Stars on Friday night will be the Tri-City Storm (4-2-4, 12 points, tied for 4th place in Western Conference).  This will be the third time this season the Stars and the Storm have played each other.  On 10/1/10, the Stars played spoiler at the Storm's home opener with a 4-3 OT shootout win over TC.  The Storm got a little revenge a few weeks later on 10/22/10 with a 4-3 win over Lincoln at the IceBox.  Unfortunately for the Stars, they will again be without their top point getter in Ryan Dzingel as he is participating in the World Junior A Challenge in Penticton, British Columbia, Canada as a member of Team USA.  Dzingel will certainly be missed.  In those two games against Tri-City this season, Dzingel has scored 5 points (2g, 3a).  Tri-City did not have any of their players selected to represent Team USA at the World Junior A Challenge, so they should have a complete roster when they faceoff against the Stars.  The good news for Lincoln is that forward Garrett Peterson has been medically cleared to play hockey after his off-season shoulder surgery, so he should be in the lineup Friday night against the Storm.  It will be nice to see Petey back in the lineup.  The Storm are riding a two game winning streak with recent wins against Sioux City (1-0), and Fargo (4-3).

Since Kevin Murdock has played so well at home the past two games, I expect him to start against the Storm on Friday night.  The Storm recently picked up goaltender Christopher Holden from the Omaha Lancers, but they also have Scott Diebold who has put up some impressive numbers so far.  Tough to say which TC goaltender will start against Lincoln.

Saturday night, the Stars will take on the Sioux Falls Stampede (7-3-0, 14 points, 3rd place in Western Conference).  The 'Pede will be looking for a little revenge against the black and blue in this game.  It was the 'Pede who lost last Friday night to the Stars 3-1 at the IceBox.  Like the Storm, this will be the third time the Stars and 'Pede have played each other this season.  In their first matchup, the Stampede rolled all over the Stars in a 7-1 romp in Sioux Falls.  As mentioned by BellTolls in his USHL Power Rankings article, the Stampede are the only undefeated team in the USHL at this time at 5-0.  In those five home games, the 'Pede have outscored their opponents 26-11.  This will be a very tough game for Lincoln, especially considering the Stampede will still have the 3-1 defeat to Lincoln fresh in their minds.  The rink in Sioux Falls is a bit smaller than the majority of rinks in the USHL, so normally it favors teams who are big and physical and can take advantage of the smaller ice surface.  In years past, the Stars have played very well in Sioux Falls because of that.  The Stampede play Friday night at home against the Omaha Lancers, so hopefully Omaha can wear them out Friday night so that the Stars can get a win Saturday night.  We'll be chatting/blogging online for this game, so make sure you check us out Saturday night here at the B³.

I've mentioned this previously, but those coming to the Stars game at the IceBox Friday night need to plan ahead and arrive much earlier than normal.  The UNL men's baskeball team will be playing their home opener Friday night at 7:00pm at the Devaney Center, so we could see a potential parking mess.  Most of those b-ball fans have not been down to the former State Fairgrounds yet since the new parking rules have been enforced, so be prepared for delays.  Arrive early, find those express lanes if you have a season ticket holder parking pass, and get parked quick.  With daylight savings last week, also remember that it will be plenty dark at 6:00pm.  It doesn't sound like the weather is going to cooperate either. :(

Hope to see another big crowd Friday night at the IceBox!  Let's make it four in a row at home!  Go Stars!!

Note:  The Stars are only 6 wins away from franchise win  number 500, and 14 goals away from 3,000 goals scored in franchise history.

To add to the mess tonight, the Husker swim and dive teams will be participating in meets at Devaney starting at 5:00pm. This is starting to sound like a potential perfect storm traffic nightmare. Arrive early if you can!!

Stars win their fourth straight home game, third win straight win overall, with a 3-0 win over the TC Storm. Kevin Murdock gets the shutout for Lincoln. I will write up a recap article Saturday morning. Great to have Petey back in the lineup!! Enjoy the win, everyone! GO STARS!!

Great game tonite!! I was starting to think that I wouldnt be allowed into the Ice Box any longer as the stars won the prior 3 games and I wasnt there. Thank god they won this one because if they lost I would of stayed home for the rest of the year just for the greater good of the team :)
