B³ Pregame Report: Lincoln Stars vs. Tri-City Storm 11/16

The Lincoln Stars will look to improve upon their current four-game winning streak Tuesday night when they travel west to battle the Tri-City Storm in Kearney.  This will be the fourth time this season that the Stars and Storm have faced each other.  The Stars are 2-1 against TC this season, with the last win coming just a few days ago when Lincoln shutout the Storm 3-0 at the IceBox on Friday, November 11th.  Faceoff for the game Tuesday night at the Viaero Event Center will be at 7:05pm.  Click here to listen to Stars radio announcer Mike Melbye call the game on AM 1480 KLMS.  Click here to watch the game on B2 Networks.  We will be blogging/chatting live for this game, so be sure to check back here at the B³ Tuesday night around 6:45pm to join in on the fun.

The Storm have not played since losing 3-0 to the Stars last Friday night, so I'm sure they will be more than eager to get back on the ice and try to get a little payback.  I wouldn't be surprised if we see some fights in this game, considering how chippy the game was on 11/11/10.  Storm defenseman Rick Pinkston and Stars forward Garrett Peterson had a number of run-ins during that game, so I wouldn't be surprised to see those two continue their rivalry tomorrow night.  From my seat, it sure looked like Pinkston was targeting some of the smaller players on the Stars (especially Josh Berge), and it appeared that Petey didn't like that much and challenged Pinkston numerous times during the game.  I'm not sure I want Petey throwing punches and possibly re-injuring that shoulder, but we'll see what happens.  Peterson is most effective when he is allowed to play the game the way he likes to play:  200 miles per hour, hair on fire, creating havoc on the ice.  You don't want to put the reins on Petey, but he can do his thing without dropping the mitts.  I'm sure there are other players on the Stars' roster who would be happy to introduce themselves to Mr. Pinkston.

The Storm (4-3-4, 12 points) are one of the lowest scoring teams in the USHL right now (2.18 goals per game), but you have to think that they are due for a big break-out game.  The Storm are the most snake-bit team in overtime this season, having lost all four games that have gone past regulation that they have played.  One of those OT losses was a 4-3 shootout defeat to the Stars on 10/1/10 in Kearney.  Since Storm goaltender Christopher Holden started, and lost, to Lincoln this past Friday night, I expect TC goaltender Scott Diebold to get the nod against the Stars.

One of the hottest teams in the USHL right now, the Lincoln Stars (6-5, 12 points) are playing their best hockey of the season at the moment.  With three of their top forwards (Peterson, Shine, Dzingel) missing multiple games the past couple of weeks, the Stars have done a great job playing as a team and winning games without those big names in the lineup.  I am not sure if Ryan Dzingel will be back in town to play Tuesday night, so there is the possibility he could miss this game also.  Without their leading scorer (Dzingel) in the lineup the past four games, the Stars are 4-0 and have outscored their opponents 13-6.  Stars goaltender Kevin Murdock has started, and won, the past four games for Lincoln, and I expect him to start against the Storm.  You have to play your hot hand, and Doc is certainly on fire.

These mid-week games can be very strange.  Understandably, it can be a little difficult to get players psyched up for a Tuesday night game in a near empty rink in Kearney, NE.  However, this Stars team will want to keep this winning streak going into the next weekend, so I expect them to come out strong and take it right to the Storm in this game.  Team confidence is as high as it has been all season, and the offense, defense, and goaltending is clicking big time.  No reason for that to change against the Storm.  Let's make it 5 in a row!

Go Stars.

The Stars are only 4 wins away from franchise win number 500, and 7 goals away from 3,000 goals scored in franchise history.
