We have ice!!

Thanks to the person who emailed me these pictures.  I appreciate it!  As you can see below, the Lincoln Stars have started the process of putting new ice down at the IceBox.  From what I understand, all of the players are arriving in town this weekend, and they will start practice sometime next week before the exhibition game against Tri-City in Kearney on 9/16.

Edit:  Click here to see more pictures of the IceBox that I took today.

By the way, if you've even wondered what's involved with putting brand new ice down in a rink, click here to watch this very informative video.  The Stars might not do it exactly how it's described in the video, but some of the processes are very similar.  The Stars staff have worked very hard this weekend to get this done.  Hats off to them!

Now we can actually call it the Ice Box again!

Players in town--- check Ice down in the box--- check 4 days until exhibition game---check= hockey season is almost here!!!

Hope to see lots of black in blue in Kearney on Thursday!

So off topic but here's some preseason scores i've seen from the other teams so far. Omaha beat Tri-City 5-3. SIoux City beat Dubuque 4-2. And Muskegon beat Chicago 4-3. It will be interesting to see how our first couple games go since we will have very little practice before our first game on Thursday.

Chicago lost yesterday to Youngstown, 5-1. It's crazy that some teams have been practicing and playing preseason games before the Stars even had ice down at the IceBox. Nothing new this season compared to others in the past. The Stars historically start training camp much later than other teams. Part of that was due to the State Fair, and the fact that they couldn't put ice down until the Fair was done.

From what I understand, the Stars will only have one or two on-ice practices before they play the Storm in Kearney this Thursday night.

Very exciting to see photos of the ice down - visualizing opening night with Ice Box full of fans :)

Just purchased tickets for exhibition game in Kearney - think they saw me coming! Two $8 tickets for a total cost of $26?? (Internet fee $4, Facility fee $2, Convenience fee $4) But at least tickets are available for this game!

I can't wait to see our team! Go Stars!!

I went down to the IceBox today to see the ice myself and take a few pictures. I will probably post those pictures on the B³ Facebook page, and post a link to them here. Everything is starting to come together at the IceBox!

Starstruck,

Yikes! I think I'm going to buy tickets the day of the game when I get there. Hopefully they won't be that much. I shouldn't complain, like you said, at least we can buy tickets to this game ahead of time, unlike the preseason game against the Lancers at Tranquility. I still don't understand why the Lancers wouldn't allow the Stars organization to buy a block of seats to sell to Stars fans.

Just posted the pictures I took today on the Facebook page. Check 'em out.

I called the Viaero Event Center box office to get exhibition tickets and I didnt get charged any other charges. Just look online @ where you're gonna want to sit and give them a call!

Tranquility doesnt even have seats..just bleachers. There is no way 1000 people can even sit. Maybe thats why..

Yes, I'm aware it's bleacher seating. Fire codes won't allow any more than the first 1,000 in the door. Just wish the Lancers would have allowed the Stars to buy some of those tickets so we could buy them ahead of time.

It's great to see the ice is down and, "the boys are back in town...". I sure wish they would have taken advantage of not having to wait for the fair to get an earlier start, but I'll defer to the wisdom of the coaching staff. It's a grueling season as it is.
I will be out of town next weekend, so I'll miss the Tanquility game, but my sweetheart will be here and since we live so close to Tranquility, she may be able to get some extra tickets when they go on sale. I don't know if there will be a limit though. We'll be willing to do what we can to help as many of you out as we can though.

I suggest if you're coming up from Lincoln, park at the soccer fields on the Northwest corner of 120th and Maple. It's about a 1/4 mile walk over to the ice rink from there (about like walking down the hill to the Ice Box from the horse track parking lot. There's only room for maybe 100 cars at the rink and it will be a mess. That's were I would be parking if I was going to drive down the hill to get a little closer.

Thanks for posting the pictures from the Ice Box Yeti. It's starting to look like hockey season!
Go Stars!

maybe without the state fair, the stars can put down ice and host an exhibition game. just saying. state fair shouldn't be an excuse for not having ice before now anymore.

Yeti said...

You are correct, Anon...it's not an excuse. Maybe next year the Stars will do just that. We'll even sell tickets to Lancers fans.

So why didn't they have the ice down earlier this year since the state fair wasn't there? I was expecting that they would have had the ice ready to go the day after Labor Day. Does anyone know what their excuse was for not having the ice down earlier this year?

I don't remember where I heard this or if its true but I heard there is something in the stars' lease agreement/contract that says they can't put ice down before a certain date. Like I said I'm not sure if that's the case but just something I've heard

As mentioned in a comment a few weeks ago, this question was brought up at the August Booster Club meeting. The coach said that there is a clause in the lease stipulating when the ice can be put down. My impression is Stars probably do not want to tamper with the terms of the current lease.

I have also heard that since the Ice Box is an older building and not intended for ice, the AC is not up to keeping the ice cold enough when it is warmer outside. I believe hopes are that the University will do some renovations, including new AC. We shall see.

I would place my bets on UNL forcing the Stars out of the Ice Box before helping them renovate it.
