North stage renovations are underway at IceBox

Thanks to blog reader "Crazy Carl" for taking this picture and letting me use it on the blog.  The north stage of the IceBox is currently undergoing renovations to transform the bleacher seating into a three-tiered "spectator zone."  I believe this new area will have its own bar and concessions stand also.  It will be interesting to see what this finally looks like once the construction is complete.

Can't wait to get back to the Ice Box! Its been a long summer. I wonder if there will be some kind of a preseason event this year? Ik last year it was the exhibition game with Tri City but 2 yrs ago they has something where they did a scrfimmage and some skills competitions which was kind of cool. Either way can't wait to watch some hockey!

i'm also looking forward to being back at the Ice Box. i didn't really think a renovation was necessary for the north stage, but it will be interesting to see what all they do.

StarsHcky - i believe there's the exhibition game at Tri-City and one in Omaha. i think that's all that's been announced as far as preseason events.. i don't know if there's anything planned for a preseason event at the Ice Box.

lincoln fan is correct. The Stars will play two exhibition games, both on the road, before the Fall Classic.

Thursday, September 16th @ 7:05pm
Lincoln Stars vs. Tri-City Storm
Viaero Event Center - Kearney, NE

Satruday, September 18th
Lincoln Stars vs. Omaha Lancers
Moylan Tranquility Ice Plex - Omaha, NE

I am unsure of the start time for the exhibition game against the Lancers. The Ice Plex is a small venue to hold an exihibition game like this. The rumor I am hearing is that Tranquility will charge a $6 admission fee for each fan wanting to watch this game. What is strange about this particular game is that neither organization has come out to officially announce it. I'll touch on this subject in the next few weeks as we get closer to September 18th.

First game at the IceBox this season will be Friday, October 8th against the Youngstown Phantoms (opening night).

Ya I know about the exhibition games, but usually they have something @ the ice box for season ticket pickup. Last year it was the exhibition and the yr before was the scrimmage thing. I just didn't know if the stars were planning anything like that @ the ice box again this year. Either way I think its like 24 or so days until the first exhibition game in kearney! Can't wait!

Yeti~ I got a little more information about the Omaha Exhibition game. It is going to be general admission, cost will be $6.00. The Lancers Org have to work out the details with Tranquility and find out the fire code, as to how many people can be in the building. They will be playing on the Olympic side. As soon as they work out all the details then it will be posted on the Lancer site.

tzweeb,
I think StarsHcky meant something for all season ticket holders, not just people who pay to join the boosters. We did have the exhibition last year where we got in free and picked up our season ticket packs. We would enjoy a season kick off too!

Any idea how they will limit numbers at Omaha if the fire code restricts the number of fans?

StarsHcky said...

Thats what im worried about too. I don't want to drive all the way to the Ice Plex and not be able to get in to watch! I seriously wonder how this is going to work and why it couldn't be someplace bigger with as many fans as both of these teams attract, esp when they play each other!

StarsHcky,

I've already heard from a number of Stars fans who share the same concerns you have. Tranquility also has a free-skate going on that same night, so there will be other people inside who will be participating in that. I am unaware of the fire code maximum allowed limit of people for Tranquility. I'm guessing it's around 1000 or less. It certainly would suck to drive all that way and then get turned away at the door. It sounds like the Lancers are in charge of this, so we'll see how they handle it. Like you mentioned, I'm confused why this game would be played at such a small venue. There will be ice down at the IceBox and the Civic by then...why not hold the game at one of those two venues?

Layla said...

I don't understand why they don't just cancel the skate if that is going to impact the number of people who can be in the building. I understand that it's up to Tranquility, but they were the ones who agreed to having the expo game there in the first place, and unless they've been living under a rock for 15 yrs, they should know that anytime Omaha and Lincoln play eachother it's gonna draw a huge crowd. Def not the most well thought out location for an expo game.

omaha may not want to be at the Civic because of special ice for their 25th anniversary, wait until home opener to show it off.

Ya and its too bad it couldn't be down here, except for im sure that Omaha wants to make the money off of it. But they really wont make half of the money they could if they had it at a decent sized arena. I guess i just don't understand how it could even be an option to have a Lincoln Omaha game in the Tranquility Ice Plex. I understand that it is just an exhibition game, but both of these teams have some of the most die hard fans in the league that will go to anything, so it seems odd to me that they would even think of having it at such a tiny place but thats just my opinion.

This was just posted on the Stars website:

Stars Announce Exhibition Games

The Lincoln Stars are scheduled to play two pre-season exhibition games against Western division rivals in September. On Thursday, September 16th, the Tri-City Storm will host the Stars at 7:05pm at the Viaero Events Center. Tickets will be $8.00 for Adults and $5.00 for youth (12 and under), students, seniors, military. Visit stormhockey.com for details on how to purchase tickets.

The Omaha Lancers will then host the Stars on Saturday, September 18th at 7:05pm at Moylan Ice Plex (12550 W. Maple) in Omaha. Ticket prices are yet to be announced. Further information will be available here, or at lancers.com.

I got on the Lancer website last night and sent them an email asking why they would have the exhibition game at Moylan when as an organization they should know full well that Stars fans travel to see their team and that the Iceplex would not be able to hold all the people from both teams wanting to see the game. As of now, I have not received a response. Will be interesting to see if they even reply back and if they do what they have to say.

Lookin' at the picture, it's obvious they don't have the ice down yet. Doggone it, get that ice down so the guys can practice! We finally got rid of the cows and horses that have held up getting the ice time the guys need, and now they've got the rink covered in saw dust!

I'm not as PO'd as I sound... just anxious for the season to start, and for the guys to get off to a hot start this year!
Go Stars!

The Lancers website released some information this afternoon regarding the exhibition game against the Stars on 9/18. Here's a quote from the article:

"The exhibition game between Omaha and Lincoln is then scheduled to begin at 7:05 PM and all tickets are just $6. All tickets will be general admission and seating is limited to 1,000 patrons. Tickets will only be sold the day of the game and no advance ticket orders will be accepted. Cash payment is required for all purchases. Ticket sales will begin at 4 PM in conjunction with the Fan Fest."

The Lancers are holding some kind of a Fan Fest from 4pm-6pm that afternoon before the game. So for those of us wanting to drive up to Omaha to watch this game, in order to guarantee a seat, we would have to be at Tranquility 3 hours before the game to buy a ticket.

I could tell you what I really think of this, but I'd probably just get myself in trouble. This game seems like something the Lancers scheduled for their fans, not us. I don't understand why they can't wait until 6pm to sell tickets, but whatever.

Just know that if you want to watch this game, you better show up at Tranquility at 4pm to guarantee you'll be one of the first 1,000 inside. Remember, the Huskers football team is playing that afternoon on TV, starting at 2:30pm. If you plan on watching that game against the University of Washington, I'd rule out going to the hockey game.

lincolnfan said...

since the Huskers will be playing around that same time, that could cut down slightly on the number of fans planning to go even though it's an away game. however, there will still be a large crowd going to the game, as there ALWAYS is when Lincoln and Omaha play.. apparently the Lancers organization is unaware of this though? also, it seems silly that they just don't sell tickets in advance and that way no one would have to be turned away the day of the game. but.. the fact that they are holding a Lincoln-Omaha game at an arena that can only hold 1,000 fans.. that's just COMICAL. what poor planning.. it would seem to make more sense that they just don't hold an exhibition game at all. anyway, i understand if you remove my comment Yeti, as i was maybe a little rude.. haha, but this is just plain ridiculous.

MacAttack said...

well, guess I got my answer, however indirectly from the Lancers. they don't care about other teams fans. this exhibition game at Moylan just sucks. if I want to go to the game, I am going to have to be at Moylan early in the afternoon, say like 2PM, in order to get a ticket. but I am not going to want to hang around for the Lancer fan fest so I would leave. however parking at Moylan is a big problem as well and I might not be able to find a spot to park when I come back even though I have a ticket to the game. so basically the Lancers are telling me to take a hike. Is it any wonder we don't like Omaha much?

HPJustin said...

With that news, the slim chances of me going basically went out the window. However much am of a hockey fan, I'll always be a Husker first and I think I'll be staying in Lincoln and watch the Washington v. Nebraska game. I don't really want to sit around for four hours at the coldest place in Nebraska with the very well called "Lancer fan fest".

BellTolls said...

In my opinion, this was not "poor planning" by the Lancers. This was exactly what they wanted. The only thing helping out Stars fans is the NU game at Washington that day at 2:30. Lots of people will be at home watching that, then hoping to get to Moylan by 7 to watch the game. Tickets will be sold out by then though.

Here's what we should do, all of us should go up to Omaha to watch the NU/Washington game at a sports bar. 4:00 will be roughly halftime or a little before, so we all go over to Moylan, buy tickets at 4:00, leave to watch the rest of the FB game and show up after the FB game and flood the damn place in Black and Blue.

If you can't tell, this ticks me off a little bit. Where is the Stars PR department (do we even have such a thing?) to justify this to Stars fans?? I hope there's some kind of preseason intrasquad scrimmage/skills competition or something at the Ice Box like we did two years ago for us fans (who I feel are treated about as well as dirt).

MacAttack said...

I wrote to Stars management to express my opinion on this whole situation. The Stars did try to reserve a block of seating for Stars fans and sell those tickets in advance thru the Stars ticket office. But the Lancers wouldn't go for that naturally. And at this time there is nothing set up for any event at the IceBox due to the timing of putting down the ice, the preseason schedule and other Stars obligations.
I think the Stars management is just as frustrated as we are. They know how passionate we are about our team. But this was out of their control.

BellTolls said...

I thought with the state fair gone we would be able to use the ice sooner than ever before...is that not the case anymore?

Layla said...

From what I remember at the last BLBC meeting ( and what I could hear) there's a clause in the lease that says we can't turn on the ice making equip before the end of the State fair. I don't know about legalities of changing a contract/Lease but it probably wouldn't be favorable to the Stars. If anyone else heard more or different info from Chad, let me know, like I said, this is what I can remember hearing, so I could be wrong.

lincolnfan said...

When will they be done with the renovations? Can they put the ice down before those are complete?

MacAttack said...

so they can't turn on the ice making equipment til after the state fair is over. that doesn't mean they can't have everything else ready to go. it's not like past years where they had to haul the dirt out of the arena BEFORE they could put down the flooring with the red/blue lines, circles and sponsors names/logos.
