LJS Article: UNL to charge for parking at fairgrounds

Thanks to the blog reader who brought this to my attention.  I appreciate it.

Yes, I'm breaking out the thumbs down picture. :)

This article was posted today on the Lincoln Journal Star website.  This isn't ground-breaking news for the majority of us, but it's a very, very interesting read for Stars fans, and Nebraska basketball fans nonetheless.  More than ever, I think this parking fee change is going to be a disaster.  I expect long lines, causing traffic jams like we've never seen, and irate fans.  Click here to read the entire article.  Here's a quote from the article:

"UNL Parking and Transit Services and Nebraska Athletics will manage all event-parking operations, including parking and traffic management inside lots and at campus entrances. Prepaid donor and booster and general ticket-holder parking will be available."

As we see above, Nebraska Athletics will share the responsibility of "event-parking operations."  These are the same clowns who made parking for Stars fans last season a nightmare.  I'm not going to ramble on and get myself in trouble over this, but I have no faith at all that this is going to run like a well-oiled machine.  It's going to be a big fat mess.  Please, please prove me wrong UNL.

When you are done reading the article and shaking your head in disbelief, make sure you click on the "comments" link to read the sparkling, joyous feedback from hockey and basketball fans.  UNL certainly isn't making any fans with this move.  Edit:  The LJS has since moved the article from the "Local" section to the "Husker Extra" section, therefore losing all of the 13 comments that were written previously.  Did anyboy out there happen to save those comments?  There were some good ones left by hockey fans.

Oh, by the way....if you're a horse racing fan, no parking fee for you.  So if you're blowing your social security check at the track, feel good that you're not getting bent over by UNL.

End of rant.

Yeti,
I emailed the LJS webmaster and asked why the story was moved and comments deleted. We'll see if they answer. I also reminded them that there are more than just Husker fans out there.

From the UNL Parking & Transit Services website : 'The Parking Advisory Committee, whose membership includes representatives from the faculty (Faculty Senate), staff (UNOPA, UAAD), and student body (ASUN, RHA), welcomes suggestions for improving UNL's parking and circulation system. If you have a recommendation, please write to the Parking Advisory Committee, UNL Parking & Transit Services.'

Hockey games is one of the more affordable sports to go see and $3.00 per car might not seem like a lot to them but it does add up.

You did forgot to highlight this minor statement:

We tried to introduce something small,” UNL parking director Dan Carpenter said of the new fee. “This is really temporary until the Innovation Campus gets going.”

Once that happens, the fee could increase.

They did say that the 2,200 season ticket holders will be covered by the Stars which is very generous of them.

I have no doubt in my mind that the parking fee will increse from $3 to $5. It's just a matter of time. When that happens, will the Stars continue to cover the parking fee for season ticket holders? I hope so, but I'm not sure.

Just noticed that the article that was originally posted was edited yet again last night. When I first posted the link to the article, it didn't include any quotes from Stars president Jim Pflug or ticket manager Micki Burhmann.

So if I'm reading this correctly, UNL baskeball season ticket holders will still have to pay $3 to park? Wow. As bad as the mens team is, they expect people to pay to park on top of what they are spending for season tickets? To watch that? Uggh. Good luck with that.

Heres a link to the parking map unl has. It looks like on basketball days we can't use the west entrance. If we have to park in the green sections I might need to buy some new hiking shoes. We are going to have to sit in line on State Fair Park Road.

Hog Rider,

Thanks for the link. Looks like you are correct. On days when the Stars and the UNL basketball teams both play, the west enterance into the fairgrounds (off of Antelope Valley Parkway) will only be available for UNL basketball boosters. The only two entrances for Stars fans will be the east and northeast entrances off of State Fair Park Drive.

Like you said, it's going to mean looooong lines on State Fair Park Drive. It's going to be ugly.

i guess we don't know all the details yet about how it's going to work, but i wonder if it would have worked better if the Stars tried to work out a deal with UNL and just increased ticket prices a little, then gave that money to the University? just some food for thought.. let's say that they increased ticket prices by $1.50, assuming at least 2 people came in every car, that would cover the parking charge. that would avoid all of the parking problems and then they would not need to hire anyone to work parking at the Stars games, at least the ones where there is no basketball going on, which would save the University money. i also think that it sounds more appealing to people if they have to only pay one cost to get into the game. it's not as big of a deal for them to pay more for a ticket, if it means that's all they have to pay, and don't have to worry about having cash on hand to pay to park. just my opinion..

News about Mark MacMillan, a Stars draft pick. MacMillan was protected by Lincoln, but he was a no-show at tryouts. MacMillian will be attending North Dakota next year, and was a NHL draft pick of the Montreal Canadians.

MacMillan was recently traded by the Alberni Valley Bulldogs (BCHL) to the Penticton Vees. Click the link below.

MacMillan became the first Bulldog drafted to the National Hockey League in June after the Montreal Canadiens chose him in the fourth round, 113th overall.

"“It is unfortunate that we had to move Mark, but Mark requested a trade to be closer to home,” Bulldogs’ head coach and general manager Paul Esdale said in a press release."

I seriously doubt we'll see him in Lincoln now. Looks like he's content to play in the BCHL, which is a step below the USHL in terms of overall talent (imo). I was hoping the coaches at UND or in Montreal would convince him to step up his game and play in the USHL.

hey hey, so does it look like to you that there will be atleast 5 games that we will want to give away our tickets so we dont have to deal with the parking nightmare that will happen on those days??

Hey Hey Whadda Ya Say said...

tzweeb...I'd agree...unless Jan 15th is a day game, then it'd only be 4 games.

I'm gonna "live the nightmare" as I don't want to give away my tickets...

Anybody got any idea how they'll separate the horse racing fans from the hockey fans ?

"The event parking areas shall operate and divide into different parking types including donor parking, season ticket holder (Stars Hockey) and general public parking depending on the type of event. Parking and Transit Services shall assess a parking fee by parking type for all approved Nebraska Athletics, or Devaney Sports Center lessees (e.g., NSAA) and Stars Hockey events. Parking and Transit Services shall not assess a parking fee for Commencement, and any other special event approved by the UNL Administration. To reduce traffic congestion due to cashiering public parking, Nebraska Athletics and Stars Hockey may consider a developing a surcharge on tickets to fund event parking operations. In addition, Parking and Transit Services recommends developing a flat parking fee for events lessees." From the UNL parking Policies. The way I'm reading this, is that Stars STH will be able to park in the Yellow section of the map that Hog Rider linked to earlier. From what one of the LJS Articles said, not all BB STH are donors, so they will have to pay to park ( Green) Not saying this is going to be a well oiled machine, but from the sounds of it we (STH) should be able to park semi close to the Ice Box. Although I'm sure it will change 20 times before the season and noone who they hire will have a clue what they are doing.

Keep in mind that some places don't necessarily charge parking fees just to make money but rather to encourage car pooling when parking capacity is limited. Not saying that is the case here but just something to think about.

Thursday September 16 is the exhibition game in Kearney

Layla said...

I called UNL Parking and Transit today, spoke with a guy named Dan, They must have one person working specifically with Stars parking issues, cuz I was transfered from the first person who answered the phone. He said he has been working with Pflug on getting a location for Stars STH to park. He said they have another meeting next week. He said once they get everything figured out, they'll have the map up.

Yeti said...

Good information, Layla. Thanks for checking on that.

StarsHcky said...

Is that the official date for the exhibition game? If it is I need to ask off for work asap!

Yeti said...

StarsHcky,

I believe Chad Johnson confirmed at the latest Blueline Booster Club meeting that the Stars would play two exhibitions games. September 16th vs. Tri-City in Kearney, and September 18th against the Lancers in Omaha.

lancers stars exhibition game is either gonna be at moylan ice complex(tranquility park) or motto ice rink in omaha not at civic.can't wait for season to start.good luck to stars and as a lancers fan look forward to a competitive series in 2010-2011 season.

Yeti said...

Anon @ 8:52pm,

The rumors floating around seem to indicate the Lancers-Stars exhibition game will be at Motto, but it hasn't been confirmed yet by either organization.

Thanks for the note.

MacAttack said...

where is Motto? I tried to find it on MapQuest and come up with nothing. would hope it has more seating available than Moylan. That place wouldn't be able to hold a heck of a lot of fans for a game. Omaha must not expect a lot of Lancer fans to show up.

So I emailed the lancers about the exhibition game andthe response said it will be the 18th @ 7:05 @ tranquility (where the tryouts were). I'm just wondering how that is going to work considering we packed the place with just stars fans @ our tryouts, which isn't even a game not to mention lancer fans too! So I'm just curious as to how this will work because I know I want to go watch!

Yeti said...

StarsHcky,

Thanks for the info, I appreciate it. I'm surprised they are going to hold it at Tranquility for the same reasons you mentioned. I wonder if they are going to play the exhibition game on the olympic sheet of ice. That side of the rink has more bleacher seating. Whatever happens, it will be packed for sure.

BTW, the Green Bay Gamblers lost their head coach Jon Cooper today. Cooper is going to be the head coach of the AHL Norfolk Admirals. To jump from the NAHL to the USHL to the AHL in only three seasons (all as a head coach) is pretty remarkable. No word yet on who will take over the vacated GB head coaching gig.

Justin S. said...

I couldn't attend the tryouts this year, but if they did it like last year, it wouldn't work on that side (the left side as you're coming in). So I would guess that the game will be played on the right side, so the stands are facing the ice.

Yeti said...

Yup, that's the olympic sheet of ice.

I linked two new articles in the twitter window on the right. Both are about former Stars players. Check 'em out.

Hey gang! Hope you're all having a good summer. IMO, the university will take every financial advantage they can, so don't be surprised if parking fees go up every year. They know we all LOVE the Ice Box, and the Stars, and they have us all painted into a corner on parking. No surprise there. If the guys have a good year, it won't hurt as much to pay to park. Unfortunately, I'll just have to offset the parking fee by passing on the awesome Ice Box nachos (lots of peppers) I enjoy every game.
I can see the Tranquility Ice arena from the deck of my house. If it works out, maybe we'll set up a little BBQ before or after the game. Stay tuned.
Can't wait for the new season, and to catch up with the best fans in hockey!
Go Stars!

ok im going to try and post this again... the parking issue will not go away.. until the stars sign a deal to play at the new lancaster event center arena.. hmmmm...
and now for the exhibition game vs. the lancers.. how do they think that 2,000 lincoln fans will be able to park at the tranquility center??
guess that BBQ party at norfolk fans house will need bus transports to get us all from their house to the game!!!!
hope you have famous daves to sponsor your party or some other BBQ place cause we are gonna pack your house.. better get some outhouse's or the streets will be flooding with left over beer!! and dont think you can back out now.. we will find out where you live and bring all the tailgaters!!!
seriously if we could do a tailgate party that would be alot of fun.. the omaha game is on a saturday and maybe it could be in the tranquility parking lot!!

This is UNL's way of driving the Stars off the property. They hate the fact that the Stars have that long term lease. Here is a great idea, UNL seems awash in taxpayer money, buy out the Stars so they can build a facility. Make it a huge buyout. This also means to get prepared to pay for parking at the new arena as well. Mark it down.
