The Stars would have had the number one overall pick in the draft today, but that pick was traded to the Tri-City Storm in the Tucker Brockett-Josh Berge trade. Lincoln's first round pick (15th overall) came from Green Bay in the trade of David Gerths. Again, you can see where the Stars are drafting today, and follow along live as the draft happens at this link.

The Stars first round pick, defenseman Ben Oskroba, commited to Northeastern University for the Fall of 2011.

That article states he is 6'6", 218 pounds. Wow. The USHL draft had him quite a bit smaller.

Stars second round pick, Chris Casto, committed to Minnesota-Duluth for the 2011-2012 season.

Good article on Stars third round pick, Josh Bretner. Receiving college interest from Brown, Michigan and Northeastern. The article mentions that Bretner wants to get in to the USHL, so he sounds promising.

I like the start so far. Defense, defense, defense. That was an area that was certainly lacking last season. Nice to see the Stars coaches address it in the draft. All three so far can put the puck in the net. Oskroba and Casto are big bodies, also.

Austin Hervey, picked in the third round, played 11 games for Team USA U-17 last season. Pointstreak has his height and weight at 6'2", 215 pounds. I think the height/weight data that is on display on the USHL draft site is old data.

It doesn't look like the Stars will have a fourth or fifth round draft pick.

Forward Jake Lynes, the sixth round draft pick of the Stars, was a teammate of the Stars 3rd round pick, Josh Bretner.

In 73 games with Maryland U-18, Lynes scored 109 points (66g, 43a) and was +40. According the link above for Lynes, he signed a tender with the Topeka Roadrunners (NAHL) for the 2010-2011 season.

Looks there was a pick between Hervey & Lynes - #65 Bryan Sinz (pick from Sioux City)

Thanks for the heads-up, Starstruck. I must have missed that one.

The Stars drafted their first goaltender of the Entry Draft, Lukas Hafner, in the 7th round. Hafner played last season for the Marquette Rangers in the NAHL.

In the playoffs for Marquette this past season, Hafner was involved in a playoff game which went into three OT's. In that game, Hafner stopped 80 of 84 shots in the loss. Wow. Here's the boxscore:

Wonder if we made a draft day trade with Sioux City for the 5th round pick...I don't recall seeing it there earlier today...I could be wrong though.

Yeti said...

BT,

I swear that 5th round pick came out of nowhere. It could have been a last minute trade. I can't think of any trade last season involving the Stars and Muskies...unless it involved Jarrod Mermis.

BellTolls said...

not sure...

side note, Lincoln selected 10 players before they had to pass, which means we have 13 players protected among last year's veterans and affiliates. Who they are...nobody knows, well some do, but they probably won't be posting it on here :)

BellTolls said...

what was the 32nd pick from with Youngstown? I don't remember that trade.

Oh wow the Stars are channeling their inner David Reekie with their 18th Round pick: Joshua Thorimbert. A goalie out of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan (David Reekie's hometown), and his WHL rights were owned by none other than the Everett Silvertips (Reekie's former team).

Good article on Thorimbert:

The STARS selected 3 goalies in this draft, that seems like a lot for a team that is having Murdock back??? Also, we could be building for the future in that position, which I like!

BellTolls said...

Nopuckluck,

I agree that is a lot. But, 3 drafted goalies + Doc at tryouts = good competition. .

Layla said...

looks like Fargo picked up Dan Weissenhofer

nopuckluck said...

No doubt, no matter what sport you talk about, coaches always want competition for starting jobs.

Yeti said...

There's a good possibility that not all three goaltenders will even show up to tryouts, also.

I'm working on a recap of all the picks made today. I hope to get that article done sometime tonight. Keep an eye out for that.

Yeti said...

Layla....I was hoping the Stars would have protected Weissenhofer on their affiliate list. He played very well for Bismark last season in the NAHL.

Also saw that garrett clement went to muskegon... I'm assuming that's the same clement that we tried trading to omaha and didn't show up. Well with all this hockey the lat few days, I am definately ready for some tryouts to be here! Is it the end of september yet?

BellTolls said...

Actually StarsHcky, I saw that too, and oddly enough it is a different Garret ClemMent, not our Garrett Clement

On another subject, Stars website shows Bruno has committed to play at Lake Superior State for the 2010-11 season.

On paper these guys we drafted should make us instantly better....vet goalie....solid d guys that also put the puck in the net....also forwards that are big and strong that are willing to pay the price to get a dirty goal....definitely can't wait for tryouts.....

Also tim according to the uno mavs message board....kretzer might have left uno again, with the other 2 to 4 other players that have left this off season
