B³ Post-Game Recap 3/13: Lincoln 2, Fargo 3

This is going to be a very brief recap.  I didn't get to listen to the game on the radio, or watch it on B2, so I don't have a lot to add.  If anyone out there has more information about this game, please feel free to comment below.  Thanks.

The Lincoln Stars lost another heartbreaker last night, falling 3-2 to the Fargo Force.  Like Friday night, the Force (oh yeah?) got out to a very quick start Saturday night when Force forward Garrett Allen scored 42 seconds into the game to give Fargo the early 1-0 lead.  That score held up until the second period when Lincoln rallied with two goals, the first scored by Stars defenseman Austin Handley, and the second by forward Sam Alfieri.  Surprisingly, the Stars held a 2-1 lead going into the third period against the Force.  However, in the third it was all Fargo.  The Force outshot the Stars 13-6 in the final stanza, and outscored the Stars 2-0 in the final period to win their 34th game of the season.  Force forward Colten St. Clair scored the game winner for Forgo with only 1:42 remaining in the third period.  The Force outshot the Stars 30-20 in the game.  Stars goaltender Jared Coreau stopped 27 of 30 shots in the loss.

Well, despite the loss Saturday night, I think the Stars should be very happy with how they played this weekend against a very good Fargo team.  It was a bare bones roster Saturday night as Lincoln was without forward John McCarron (shoulder injury) and defenseman Cory Hibbeler (unknown).  Add in Josh Berge and Brent Tate being out of the lineup with their injuries, and you can see that the Stars were shorthanded big time this weekend.  But like I said yesterday, the players battled all weekend long and gave Fargo all they could handle.  They should be very proud of their effort, considering they were playing on the road with a very short bench against a quality hockey club.

The Stars return to the IceBox this Wednesday night for a St. Patrick's Day game against the Des Moines Buccaneers.  Call 474-STAR ext.1 to get your tickets.  There will be $1 green beer from 6:00pm-7:00pm, so wear green, arrive early, and take part in all of the IceBox shenanigans.

Go Stars.

Thanks as always for the recap and coverage. Any word yet as to why Hibbeler was not in the lineup?

It would be nice to know exactly what is going on with Reid and Rayner. Both Mike Melbye and Coach McGroarty danced around the subject this weekend. Brent Wagner of the LJS has done a terrible job this season keeping us up to date with what goes on with the team. Not sure why, because last season I thought he did a good job. This season Wagner has been MIA and his blog is a ghost town. Thank you Yeti for all that you do. Without your blog we all would be in the dark. You don't get paid for what you do but you provide all of us with great info. The Stars organization should thank you!

Wish I could add something to the recap, but those of us who have to listen to the game through the internet had no broadcast for the 2nd & 3rd periods. The folks with access to am radio kept us posted, but not the same as being able to actually hear the game. Anyway, thanks Yeti & Layla for running the chats this weekend!

As I told you before Jimmy is playing the cover my ass game by sending Reid and Rayner home as there is no other justification for this. Hibbeler will probably be next as it looks like Jimmy will continue to try and save his job. The coaching staff has lost the respect of the players which can happen at any level and is why Mr. Pflug needs to grow a set and stop further damage to this great team and its fans

After a well played weekend by the boys, a Negative Nancy has to come in a ruin the spirits. Let's celebrate the successful weekend and leave the coach talk until the end of the season which is the earliest time a decision will be made on Jimmy's future.

Anonymous said...

What did Reid and Rayner do that was so bad. Does this all stem from Reid being the third man in and then Rayner challenging another. Now the rumors have Hibbler being off the team? What is going on with this team? Is the coach ending the season as he started by trading/cutting all of his best talent. I'm still upset over the Jimmy Siers deal. Lets not forget, while we do all this belly aching, to say thanks to the players for giving us their best. For the players leaving, I hope Lincoln was a positive experience. I don't see how it could be, but a guy can always hope.

Mr USHL Prospecting man or girl @ 6:36 you go ahead and explain all the positive stuff to the boys who are out and on the their way home but good on you to keep your spirits high through the rose colored glasses you must be wearing

all in all, i thought it was a great weekend. quite honestly, i expected Fargo to win by at least a couple of goals both nights, but Lincoln managed to pull out a shootout win on Friday and made Fargo work hard for the win on Saturday. i wouldn't fault Brent Wagner for not providing good coverage of the Stars.. if it was up to him, we would still have the same blog as last year. JournalStar.com did that stupid upgrade over the summer, and the old blog got lost.. they had to make the new one which isn't near as user friendly and requires some complicated registration. thanks to Yeti and BellTolls, we have a place to talk about the Stars, and also get great coverage of the team. :-)

To Mr. or Mrs. anonymous @8:34, who must be too scared or something to put a name down instead of anonymous, I am of the male sex if you wanted know, I do not wear glasses of any color, especially not rose. If you want to sit around and bash the coach, be my guest, but if it hasn't done anything yet, it won't do anything now. You can sit around here and complain as an anonymous blogger, or you can go to Stars management and complain to them, where you would have to put a name to yourself.

Yeti,
Rayner is still on the team but was serving a suspension this last weekend-not sure what for. Don't quite understand why Melby would say otherwise.

To USHL ProspectsBlog my name is NHL ProspectsBlog so you can feel better knowing who I am. My opinion is as valid as yours thus we have vehicles such as Blogs to express them. I am a paying fan watching a salaried Coach ruining our teams overall play and maybe even ruining some of these young players futures.(in my opinion)If you are happy to turn a blind eye good for you on all the power to you. I believe there are many fans that have had enough of the present situation and here at Lincoln we are a hockey smart fan base.

Rayner was suspended for his penalty box problem a few weeks ago. Don't know what Hibbs did to join the doghouse. I thought the boys played well this weekend despite their internal issues.

Anonymous said...

what is this penalty box problem??? I am hearing it a lot but know one wants to let everyone else in. If someone knows please post.

nutz4puckz said...

Rayner and a penalty box problem? I must have missed something. All I know is a bizarre year keeps getting stranger by the day.

Anyone else anxious to see the special jerseys for the auction this coming Saturday night?

Anonymous said...

You said it Nutz4puckz "it gets stranger by the day" Coach has no control over this teams this year that's all I can say. And how does a coach not have control of his team? he lets some get by with crap and then the others think he got by with that so I'll try this and it just snowballs after a while. Maybe the owners finally are cracking down on coach for some of the off ice crap that has been going on and sounds like on ice problem. He should have cracked down long ago and maybe we would be in the playoffs.

Just bring on the special jerseys can't wait Corey always does a great job.

Any yes I'm just another anonymous.

Yes the season gets stranger every weekend, players getting booted from the team suspended, etc. And maybe the owners are putting pressure on the coachs but I need to say this, these coachs have lost all respect of the players or at least most of them, fans that know what is going on have lost respect and this all could have been advoided if the coachs would have not covered up all the season long dirt and sweep it under the rug so as to try and keep everything a big secret. The coachs have cut their own throat and now they are trying to stop the loss of respect bleeding.
There are players on this team that should have been booted by mid season and sent packing. But that didn't happen. Those golden players are still with us. YUK!
There are fans out there that know what has been sweep under the rugs by the coachs and it plain turns my stomach sour, but all will surface when the season finally ends.
If these coachs do learn by their mistakes and god I hope they do. They better right this sinking ship of support of current day coaching.
Season ticket sales is just around the corner and our ticket manager has her hands full. And it's not her fault.
Those of you that don't know what's going on keep up the positive outlook, clouds are on the way.

Just wanted to drop a note and say that we had the chance to make it up to Fargo this past weekend and saw a great hockey game. Stars fans should be extremely proud of the effort and how the team played this past weekend and regardless of what has and has not happened with off-ice stuff, I think fans should know that the players that are on the ice are still putting forth a great effort and giving fans their monies worth. We had a number of Fargo fans (all of whom were extremely friendly and fun to hang out with) say a lot of positive and complimentary things about the players and the team. You should be proud. Also, I would strongly encourage Stars fans to make a trip to Fargo - it's well worth it. They have a great arena (except avoid the weekend Bon Jovi is in town - tough (and expensive) to find a hotel!)

Just a side note and not sure if anyone has heard this but it sounds like Jake Newton is close to signing a contract with the Anaheim Ducks!

nutz4puckz said...

That's great news about Newton. Lets get another Star in the NHL!!

So what happens if there are not enough players left on the team come Wednesday-do we get to drink $1 green beers all night since the puck will not drop.

Yeti,
How long do you give Stars management before they ask you about the blog? You and BT do a good job of trying to be Switzerland through this but I know they don't like reading the truth. I think they will try to get to you before the other shoe drops.

Yeti said...

Jofa,

I'm just providing a forum for Lincoln fans. I run my mouth enough around here, so I let the fans say what they want (within reason). What's the truth, what's fiction...I have no idea. I'm just a fan. I'm not a housing parent. I'm not a player parent. I don't know any of the players or coaches personally. I'm not in the locker room, I'm not at practice, I'm not on the team bus during road trips. I have no clue what's going on behind closed doors, nor do I want to know. I don't pretend to be any kind of expert on the Stars. BT and I are hockey fans, that's it. We watch the games, and give our opinions.

I hope the Stars management isn't upset about this blog. I don't know why they would be. Again, I'm just providing a spot for Lincoln fans to interact with each other. I love the Stars. There's no place I'd rather be on a Friday or Saturday night than the IceBox watching the best team in the USHL. That's why I created this blog.

Jofa...if you don't mind, send me an email when you can: lincolnstarshockey@gmail.com

My money at the auction would be on #19 or #27.

I can't wait to see them!!

StarsNutz said...

I spoke with Will Rayner tonight, and I can tell you all from the horse's mouth that he has not been removed from the team...I can't speak for Reid, but Rayner is still 100% with the team...

I would say that shines jersey will also go pretty high... hopefully people will still come out and bid on these jerseys even tho the sseason hasn't gone as planned.

all this coach talk is getting outta control. do any of u remeber last season?? we had player suspensions that know one knew why. sado was sent home for awhile and lost is A was coach stopping the bleeding then?? no he was just helping a kid grow. some of these kids just arent mature enough off the ice. so 2 the fan sitting in the stands he might look like a good kid but off the ice hes a cancer. there are things that happen in the locker room that no one else knows about and it will always b that way. everything that could go wrong has gone wrong this year. coach hasnt had the players here and healthy 2 run a good program. hes not the one on the ice firing shots over the net, not making break out passes, not putting break away passes on the tape. hes just had to deal with the cards hes been givin. so everyone step back, if all this happens agian next year u have a piont but dont forgit this coaching staff was a piont away from the anderson cup last year.

I wonder if the organization got slapped with a hefty fine for the fight at the end of the Chicago game. I know the league has fined the team in the past for similar altercations (omaha in the playoffs two years ago,ie) If so, maybe the punishments against Rayner and Reid were directed by management since they were handed down a few days after the league doled out its suspensions. I know the team doesn't like paying these fines at all and maybe they told Jimmy that enough is enough with this and something needs to be done. This is all speculation on my part. I am just trying to piece things together and not spread rumors.

Anonymous said...

Anonymous 11:33, Well said, I couldn't agree more. Others want us to believe they have "inside" information and know what's going on in the locker room, yeah right. Thanks Yeti, for a great blog.

Anonymous said...

Anonymous 11:08 - who said anything about what goes on in the locker room. I'm talking about what extra activities go on outside the rink and what went on in the penalty box. You know people outside the hockey world live in this town also, talk gets around.

Anonymous said...

11:33 -- Close, but you have no idea what has been happening this year. How many players have been sent home this year? Any idea? How many "team" suspensions, not "league" suspensions have been made public? Players have gotten away with things that have just been hushed up by the coachs and players and the general public don't have a clue what's going on. So, 11:08 I know what you don't.

Cold Bud

Anonymous said...

Anony 11:54...for those of us who are parents with a son/player on the team, your inferences and comments made without substantiating them are very disconcerting and alarming and certainly makes a parent feel like they are not in the know. We can only trust what we are told by our son (which is very little to nothing) and certainly will not call the coach or management to confirm/deny rumors and accusations that are made on a message board; however, I feel that if you are not in a position or comfortable divulging complete and/or accurate information, that maybe it would be best to refrain from alluding to things that cannot be confirmed or denied and ends up feeding the rumor mill and causes further ill will. This is getting ridiculous!

Anonymous said...

anonymous 12:38,
AMEN to that!! Miller must have one heck of a contract with the Stars! As for the parent above it must be extermely tough to send your kid to a place this far away and trust that they will be taken care of properly. I know a lot of the housing parents and the kids are in great hands off the ice. I also understand that part of being a part of the team means leaving what happens at the rink at the rink. That being said there seem to be fewer kids this year with off ice jobs. Granted that may be because of the economy but in past years they were given things to do at the ice box instead of sleeping til noon every day. That seemed to cure a lot of off ice problems. Hard to party when you have to get up early to work. It just seems like the coaches have let a lot of stuff go this year that didn't fly in the past. We are all thankful that you have allowed your son to play for the Stars and nobody here faults the kids. They play their hearts out and they are all great kids. As Stars fans we're just not used to losing when we seem to have the talent to be in the playoff hunt at least.

Anonymous said...

I know I shouldn't feed the rumor mill but what is this penalty box talk referring to? And FYI I was also very disgruntled about the Siers trade, but STOKED about his scholarship!

Anonymous said...

To 11:54, You know what I don't? I stand by my original statement; Yeah, right.

Layla said...

Anon 11:54-
Please enlighten us, how many players have been sent home this year? Because from what I can tell the only player who has been rumored to have been sent home is Reid. Baumbick was traded to Wichita falls and apparently he refused to report, Clement was traded to Omaha and he refused to report. Neither player was "Sent home" they made a decision that impacted their hockey careers. Siers, Chartier, Brockett, Gerth, Puskar etc were traded and are either currently playing in the USHL or decided to play hockey elsewhere after being traded to another USHL team, and as for all the other players who have worn Stars jersey's they were emergency call ups and as far as I know are back with their respective teams. If you have any other information please post with a link or some way of confirming that they are no longer with their team.

I have received more information (anon comments) about this penalty box "incident," but I really don't believe this blog is the place to be talking about it. Personally, I think it would be tacky to discuss the specifics here. I believe this is something better left alone. The coaches have dealt with it. Let's leave it at that. No sense in piling on. Thank you.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email me at: lincolnstarshockey@gmail.com

ahhhh yes, a blog to discuss 'all things Stars' as long as you don't attack a player or other poster.... or Yeti doesn't want to dwell on it.
