Postgame Report - Lincoln at Green Bay

That's more like it. Finally, the Lincoln Stars got a bounce to go their way. The Stars pulled off a win Saturday night in Green Bay against the number one team in the East right now, the Green Bay Gamblers, 1-0. Garrett Peterson netted the game-winner with 2:29 remaining in overtime.

I did not listen to or view the game last night, so I am not the most qualified person to write a postgame report, but I'll do my best by studying the box score.

The Gamblers put 29 shots on Lincoln's net, but goaltender Matt Green, playing in just his second game as a Star, was up to the challenge, stopping every shot he faced. It marked the first career shutout for Green, and the first since Oct. 3 when the Stars beat Sioux City, 2-0. I mentioned Lincoln got a lucky bounce in this game, and that came on a Gambler breakaway that ricocheted off the post and out. This team has been due for some time to get a break.

Speaking of due, how about Garrett Peterson? He brings energy and hustle to the lineup every night, but has been snake-bit this season with 1 goal on 28 shots coming into Saturday's game. He buried an unassisted goal though in the 4-on-4 overtime session and sent the Stars back to Lincoln on a happy bus ride.

Both teams were 0-for-5 on the power play in the game, which had no fights, no delay of game penalties and no goals through three periods, which is rare for a Stars-Gamblers game.

Like a few other USHL teams, the Gamblers decide to award their 3 Star Selections only to Gambler players. So the Black and Blue Blog will select its own 3 Stars, since the award is actually meant for the top three players on the ice during the game.

3 Star Selection
1. Matt Green, LIN - 29 saves on 29 shots, first career shutout.
2. Garrett Peterson, LIN - game-winning goal with 2:29 left in overtime
3. Ryan McKay, GB - 16 saves on 17 shots

The Stars are still in last place in the West with 12 points, but trail Des Moines and Sioux City by just three points and Fargo and Tri-City (seven losses in a row) by four points. So in a nutshell, a couple good weekends could put the Stars right back in the top four in the West.

The Thanksgiving game is Wednesday against Indiana at the Ice Box. Always a fun one and tickets will sell fast, so hurry and purchase yours now if you haven't! It's always a good time to bring relatives to a game who are coming into town as well!

It's a busy week for the Stars. They got back from Green Bay today, turn around and play on Wednesday, and then leave for Youngstown, Ohio for games against the Phantoms on Friday and Saturday. Youngstown is the longest trip of the season for the Stars at 14 hours.

Great wrap-up, Nate. Well done.

Great to see Petey finally break out with a huge goal. He's one of my favorite players on the team. Love his hustle and determination. Also great to see Matt Green stand on his head and record the shutout. He gave up 8 goals in his first game for Lincoln, then came back with the shutout in his second start. Nice to see him bounce back. We need some good competition from the goaltenders. It forces them to want to play better, to get the starts. Healthy competition is always good.

Hope to see a good turnout this Wednesday for the Indy game.

Did I miss it or did the LJS not have a write up on Saturdays game

One thing they seemed to stress in the post-game, in addition to great saves by Green, was the work of the D & Green in sweeping away the puck and not allowing rebound shots. Nice to see the goaltender getting that support and it seems to hold promise that they are figuring out their roles & coming together to play as a team! Not many shots on goal for us, but the guys still found a way to win, which is what matters most.

Seemed like the ref let the teams play for a change and did not try to decide the game by calling a lot of unnecessary penalties. (Surprising to me, since it was Webinger).

See everyone Wednesday night - love those home games! Go Stars!!

I Hate Tri City,

The LJS did have a very brief article online, and in the paper. You'll probably have to copy and paste:

So, I wonder if we should do a live blog/chat for the Youngstown games this weekend? We didn't do it Saturday night, and the Stars won. Did we break the chat curse? Is it safe to do another chat?

Any progress on the idea of watching the game on B2 at a local bar? A lot of people seemed interested. Otherwise, let's go for it!

My opinion: Absolutely! I think James would even stop leaning on the CAPS LOCK if you set up another live chat:)

the problem is that B2 charges considerably more money to a bar. I worked at a bar that showed in and when B2 realized it was a bar they jacked the cost way up and we couldn't afford to show it.
