Postgame Report - 10/2 Lincoln vs. Fargo

Final Score: Lincoln 2, Fargo 5

The Lincoln Stars lost the first game of the 2009-'10 season on the road, when the Fargo Force skated past the Stars by a score of 5-2. Fargo started the scoring early on in the first period when forward Nate Schmidt re-directed a powerplay shot past Stars goaltender Jared Coreau to give the Force a 1-0 lead. Just 27 seconds later, newly acquired Stars forward Andrew O'Leary collected the puck after it was misplayed by Fargo goaltender Cody Campbell, and scored to even the game at 1-1. Assisting on the goal by O'Leary was Andrew Ammon. In the second period, Stars forward Kyle Gibbons scored just 12 seconds after Fargo's second goal to tie the game at 2-2. Assisting on the goal by Gibbons was John McCarron. After that, it was all Fargo. The Force scored three straight goals in route to the victory, thanks to some undisciplined play by the Stars.

The Stars were outshot by the Force, 25-14. With only 14 shots on goal, the Stars offense was obviously anemic. You aren't going to win too many games with that few shots on goal. It doesn't help when your team commits 13 infractions for 26 penalty minutes, and spends most of the game on the penalty kill. I know it's early, so I am hoping this game is easily forgotten by the players, and they rebound tonight in Sioux City. Having said that, we have seen the Stars play undisciplined hockey at times the past couple of years, and as a fan it's really frustrating to watch. The team obviously has the talent to compete with the best in the league, but you can't showcase those skills when the team is always sending a player to the penalty box. You have to play smart hockey. Unfortunatly in this game, once the Stars fell behind two goals, their undisciplined play got even worse. You can't come back from a two goal deficit if you constantly have to kill penalties.

It was great to hear the voice of Mike Melbye again on the radio. I'm a big fan of Melbye, and believe he's one of the best play-by-play announcers in the USHL. Yeah, I'm biased...so what. :)

The Stars will look to spoil the home opener for the Musketeers tonight, when Lincoln knocks heads against Sioux City. Without a clear cut #1 goaltender, I expect the Stars to start Steven Racine tonight. Faceoff is at 7:05pm.

Go Stars.

Thank God for Melbye last night or we wouldn't have known much about what was going on. Tried to watch on B2....very frustrating, the feed was terrible. We'll hope it's better tonight! Thanks for the blog updates...Gooooo Stars!

I think Coreau is the best choice at goalie. He had one "bad" game against Fargo. I say bad in quotations because at this level of hockey, 3 GA is not terrible compared to the league average. (I know he gave up 4 goals, but I 'm not going to count the "was it a whistle or wasn't it goal".) You have to remember that Coreau had a great preseason allowing only a few goals. It only was when we switched goaltenders in between periods that we fell behind. After seeing both of the goalies play in Sioux City, Coreau has my backing 110%.

Johnson proves he still knows how to win and made the Stars offense look really bad.Avoid stupid selfish penalties and go with the guys who can put the puck in the net!

anybody else trying to blog during the game???

Yeti said...

I'm here, tzweeb. Do you mean on this blog, or the Blueline Blog?

Uneventful game so far. No score at the end of the first period. Jimmy Siers dropped the mitts. Coreau in net. Stars only dressed five defensemen, and Matt Bruneteau caught a puck in the face and is out of the game. Not sure how severe the injury is to Matt. Petey is playing defense to help out.

Stars up 1-0. Steve West with his first goal as a Star.

Stars playing better tonight. They've cut down on the dumb penalties.

hey yeti... whats the blueline blog???
i dont think that thing is alive anymore.
im liking the play of brockett.. mentioned him before elsewhere, but he seems to be the real deal.. i know that west got the goal but got to give props where they are deserved.

Of course right after I said the Stars cut down on the penalties, they commit a "too many on the ice" minor, and a trip. Bleh.

Stars up 1-0 after the second period.

tzweeb...scroll down and read the article I wrote about the Blueline Blog. It will be back. Just be patient.

how about i give some props to YETI for running a great site here.
i would think that someone needs to pay you for what your doing.
great posts and info...
i tried to get on the LJS blog site but it just really isnt up to what it used to be..
remember getting over a 100 posts???
guess those days are over for LJS.
we can all join in here during away games and yeti will control the trolls...LOL
even the stars link for facebook is not working, but twitter is doing ok.. its new to me but im starting to figure it out as well.

yeti are you tweeting?

Yeti said...

Yes, I have a twitter account...but I don't use it. Keeping this blog up to date with info is enough work for me.

Brent and the LJS are working on a new Blueline Blog that will be similar to the old one. Brent said getting the new blog online was a priority to the LJS sport editor, so it will be back soon I'm sure. I miss his blog too.

Hoping for a big third period from the Stars!

Yeti said...

By the way, with Brent's blog down...maybe I should start a "gameday live blog" so people can live blog during the away games. I'll start doing that next weekend. tzweeb needs a place to chat. :)

Bruneteau is still out with an injury, which is not good. Hopefully it isn't too serious. Melbye said there was blood on the ice, so I'm assuming he had to get stitched up.

Stars need a strong, and disciplined third period to win it.

a few more thoughts since its just yeti and myself here tonight...
i would have thought racine would have been in net tonight, but coach m knows best.
last night i would say that the old stars and our time in the p box is not a good way to get started. seems like thats when we gave up some scores. one p.p. and one empty netter. could have been a different result. something we can work on.
tonight sounded like seirs is keeping his style up to any contenders... cant wait for friday nights opener at the ice box.
then of course my kids and i will be traveling to the civic and wearing the stars colors... lets all make it a great first night for the stars in omaha again.
i agree that melbye is doing a great job now.. trying to forget his first year, but even when we are watching on B2 i cant do without his comments. by the way im not on b2 tonight but still online as it has better sound then the AM radio signal.

as far as brent is doing, i know that he has some other things on his mind now... not going to announce anything as thats up to him to let us fans know his personal life... hmmm??
cant wait to see what LJS will do to the blog to get us fans back in touch with each other.

coreal is hot tonight!!!
lets finish our first shut out of the year. the pipes are our friends!!!!!

Brodie Reid scored an empty net goal. Stars up 2-0 with 50 seconds remaining.

Looks like the Stars will win their first game of the season! Great effort by Coreau in the third. He really stood on his head.

tzweeb said...
