Stars unveil big goalie - LJS Article

Saw this article posted on the Lincoln Journal Star website today. Great article by Brent Wagner on one of the Stars new goaltenders, Jared Coreau.

Click here to read the entire article.

Note: Brent Wagner had an interesting sidenote to the article above, in regards to Matt White. Here's what Brent said: "Matt White did report as part of the 25-man preseason roster as expected. Lincoln still has his rights and would welcome White at a later date, McGroarty said. White played for Des Moines for two seasons and committed to North Dakota."

Well, maybe Matt is just trying to figure out what he wants to do with his hockey career. A UND beat writer posted on his blog a few weeks ago that White was quitting hockey. He would be a welcome addition to the Stars, so I hope he eventually joins the team. We'll have to wait and see I suppose. I doubt he'll be in the lineup later this week when the Stars travel to Sioux City, Iowa to participate in the USHL Fall Classic.

To me that comment was kind of confusing, I wonder if it should have said "... Did not report... as expected" Cuz if he had reported why point out that we have his rights? If he was in town it would be a given that we'd have his rights.

I believe you are correct. It makes more sense to say, "Matt White did NOT report as part of the 25-man preseason roster as expected."

I guess the Stars and McGroarty are just waiting to hear from White himself if he really wants to quit hockey altogether. Just seems really strange a kid with all kinds of talent, with a full ride to UND, and in his NHL draft year...would just quick hockey. Just a strange story.

I think the comment correctly summarized the situation. White DID report to preseason camp and was placed on the 25 man roster based on his performance at that camp. It was after that camp that he apparently began having second thoughts about playing this year. Looks to me like McGroarty is doing the smart thing by giving White the time and space he needs to think about his future and letting him know he could come back if he so chooses.

Sometimes we forget that these are 17 year old kids we are talking about. White left home as a 15 year old - here's hoping he is happy with his decision.

Well, that makes sense also.

I'm confused. :)

Anonymous 3, it didn't say he reported to presesaon camp, it said he "did report as part of the 25-man preseason roster as expected." In order for that to be true, that would mean he showed up to Lincoln this fall, which didn't happen. I agree with the first two posters that it should have said, "did not report as expected" but in the end it doesn't really matter because your post is still correct because he showed up to camp, made the team and had second thoughts. Brent just was saying something else. Amazing what one word can do to change the meaning.
