Stars 25 Player Protected Roster

Well, here it is. Just two hours after I posted my roster predictions, Brent Wagner of the Lincoln Journal Star Blueline Blog posted the 25 player protected roster after talking to Coach Jimmy McGroarty. Nice to finally see who is, and who isn't part of the team.

F – Jarrod Mermis (’90)
F – James McNulty ('91)
F - Garrett Peterson ('91)

D - Nate Baumbick ('91)

G - Jared Coreau ('91)
G - Steven Racine ('91)

Futures roster (expected to be on preseason roster)
F - Dominic Shine ('93)
F - Kyle Gibbons ('91)

The first thing that stands out to me is Kyle Gibbons on the futures roster, and not on the main roster. In my opinion, Gibbons was one of the best forwards at camp. I thought for sure he was a lock for the team. He could still move up to the main roster after the Fall Classic...and I expect that to happen.

James McNulty tried out for the Stars last season...as a defenseman. He wasn't at the tryouts this year, and was dropped from the Stars affiliate list last season. He was drafted again by the Sioux Falls Stampede this past Spring, so I am surprised to see him on the roster. He impressed me at tryouts last year, and was always a player I hoped to see in the future for the Stars. BIG body...and good hands. Glad to see him on the team.

Dakota Mermis was the youngest player at tryouts, but I had heard he was going to play closer to home, and not play for Lincoln this season. Surprised to see him on the roster, but again...this could be the case where he plays in the Fall Classic, and then is put on the affiliate list before the season starts.

Brodie Reid is a pleasant surprise...IF he reports. I heard during tryouts that he did not show up to Omaha to try out at the last minute, so I assumed he was staying in the BCHL. Having him on the team would help with losing Corban Knight, but again...I don't know for sure if the Stars expect him to report, or if the Stars are just protecting him....hoping he might report.

Thoughts on the roster? Are there players you are surprised to see on it? On paper, what is the strong point of this team...offense, defense, or goaltending?

I think Dakota is too young to be put on the affiliate list. This year they drafted 93's, so that's the youngest they can be on that list, I think anyways.

Ryan, you might be right. The blog says the Stars lost the rights to Luke Johnson because of a new league rule, and I wonder if that is you can't affiliate players 5+ years younger than the overage limit.

I don't understand the whole Luke Johnson thing. Brent stated on his blog that he's on Fargo...so was he traded, or what? Why all of a sudden is he on their roster? If they can put him on their affiliate list, why can't we put Dakota Mermis on ours?

Brent also said that Brodie Reid was "committed" to playing in Lincoln next season. I'll believe it when I see it. Everything I heard at tryouts was that he flaked out at the last minute, and decided to to show up in Omaha. His scoring touch would be welcome, though. I think this years squad is lacking in the goal scoring category. Guys like Petey, Chartier, and Gerths are really going to have to step up.

Nice to finally have a roster - that got ugly for a while there. Yeti, I am impressed with your roster predictions. If you factor out the "maybe he will play and maybe he won't" players, you nearly nailed it. See Dominic Shine is on the "expected" to be there, but Ambrosia is not. Had read Ambrosia has a Princeton 2012 committment.

The FAQ's on the draft said no age restrictions and players are "generally" between the ages 16 & 20, so why all of a sudden a rule change?

Matt took a sudden jump in the captain's poll - must have some enthusiastic supporters (or supporter!), not that he would not be a good choice, but...

I goofed in my earlier post. I didn't read Brent's blog right. So much for my reading comprehension skills. Luke Johnson is not on Fargo's roster. I don't know why I thought I read that.

I'm going to dissect the roster a bit more in an upcoming blog article.
